Summer Health Education Assistant – Public Health Laboratory
Looking to gain hands-on laboratory experience while supporting the health of your community? Join the Public Health Laboratory team at Oakland County this summer and play a vital role in protecting local water quality and environmental health.
This is more than a summer job — it’s an opportunity to build real-world laboratory skills, learn advanced microbiological techniques, and contribute to meaningful public health work.

What You’ll Do
• Prepare and process environmental water samples for microbiological analysis, including culture-based testing and PCR setup.
• Assist with sample labeling, setup, and documentation to ensure accurate chain-of-custody and data integrity.
• Prepare, sterilize, and pour microbiological media following established SOPs and quality control guidelines.
• Support sample preparation, media preparation, reagent handling, and quality control procedures alongside senior laboratory staff.
• Record and maintain laboratory data in laboratory information systems and logbooks with a high degree of accuracy.
• Perform routine laboratory maintenance including cleaning, sterilizing, and organizing glassware and equipment.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant workspace while adhering to biosafety and public health laboratory standards.
• Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and regulatory guidelines to ensure safety, quality, and reliability of results.

Minimum Qualifications
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
A. REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Have completed at least 2 years from an accredited college or university, with course work in Community Health, Education, Biology, Nutrition, or a related area.
Essential Job Functions
Acts as photographer at events and presentations.
May update directories and databases, take inventory of unit supplies.
Assists with educational presentations, develops brochures, flyers and displays.
May be responsible for creating, developing, marketing, presenting, and evaluating one summer educational “project”. (Such as “sun safety”, “bike safety”, etc.)
Utilizes current county-wide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to communicate, prepare written documents, operate office equipment, and handle office supplies.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a typical office environment.
