Engineering Intern

The Village of Tinley Park has an exciting opportunity for a Engineering Intern to join our Public Works Department reporting directly to the Village Engineer and to perform field work and provide administrative support for the Village’s Capital Improvement Projects, bid processes for new construction and replacement of roadway, sidewalk, bike path, and utility projects, as assigned, and miscellaneous office-based work.
Key Responsibilities:
The Engineering Intern assists the Engineering Department in new or ongoing projects as directed by the Village Engineer and/or Engineering Project Manager. They will perform field work to include obtaining accurate distances and necessary field data using a measuring wheel, range finder, pole stick or other engineering tools, assist in the preparation and maintenance of contract documents and electronic web-based documents for field operations.
This position will get exposure to municipal work within civil engineering, such as surveying, design, maintenance, and construction of public rights of way, public utilities, and stormwater management systems for various capital projects within the Village. It will assist in field inspections and gathering field data (quantities) related to paving and repaving of streets, replacement of sidewalks, curb and gutter R&R and installation of water and storm utilities.
The responsibilities also include performing general office work, such as scanning, filing, and office engineering work. Assists in; construction management of village public improvement projects, providing public relations services for various capital improvement projects, reviewing and updating of the municipal website and construction projects, surveying or GPS data collection and manage various computer applications.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills:
Enrolled in a Civil Engineering (or related field) Bachelor’s or Master’s program with a valid driver’s license.
Our ideal candidate will have knowledge of the following computer applications: Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, GIS and engineering practices and design processes. Will have the following skills; software & technical Tools, field & inspection, analytical & administrative, strong written and verbal communication, ability to explain technical concepts to non-engineers, team collaboration, time management, professionalism with contractors and residents, attention to detail. Will have the ability to; work in inclement weather and walk on uneven terrain without a loss in productivity or quality of work, prepare clear and concise reports, memoranda, correspondence, and other documents, establish and maintain good working relationshipsMaintain a professional attitude and physical appearance appropriate for daily public contact.
Additional Information:
Additional demands are working near moving construction machinery in precarious places, exposed to wet/humid conditions, extreme cold, or extreme heat, and high noise levels, as well as an office environment with light to moderate noise levels and controlled temperature conditions. Also, frequently required to sit, talk, walk, and hear; use hands to touch, handle, feel, or operate office and field measurement equipment; reach with hands and arms; smell to detect odors; and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds (with assistance as required).
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Operate a motor vehicle to drive to other Village facilities, work sites, and other locations as necessary
The rate of pay for this position is $20.00 - $25.00 per hour.
