Program Overview

The 2026 Summer Law and Human Rights Internship in Ghana offers students valuable international experience working alongside legal professionals and community organizations dedicated to justice, mediation, and human rights advocacy.

Based in Accra, Ghana, this program allows interns to gain insight into the realities of access to justice in West Africa while contributing to community-based initiatives that promote legal awareness, mediation, and human rights protection.

Interns receive professional supervision and structured exposure to legal institutions and community organizations. Depending on university requirements, the internship may qualify for academic credit.

Due to the hands-on nature of the program and the need to maintain meaningful supervision and placements, the internship hosts a limited number of participants each term.

This program is ideal for students pursuing studies in law, human rights, political science, international relations, criminology, sociology, or related disciplines.

 

Internship Responsibilities

Interns may participate in:

• Assisting legal professionals with client intake and documentation
• Observing legal consultations and case preparation processes
• Supporting research on human rights and access to justice issues
• Assisting with legal awareness and community education activities
• Preparing summaries, reports, or research briefs on legal topics
• Observing mediation and dispute resolution processes
• Learning about the role of legal aid and advocacy organizations in Ghana

Responsibilities may vary depending on current projects and the intern’s academic background.

 

Professional Placement Experience

Participants gain practical exposure through supervised engagement with legal and community institutions, including:

• Professional supervision at the Legal Aid Commission where interns may observe client consultations and legal assistance processes
• Court visits to observe legal proceedings and understand the Ghanaian judicial system
• Educational visit to Ghana’s Parliament House to learn about legislative processes
• Engagement with community empowerment initiatives such as the Achievers Girls Program
• Observational exposure to community mediation practices at the Islamic Mediation Center

These experiences help interns understand both formal legal systems and community-based conflict resolution approaches.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the program, interns will:

• Develop insight into international human rights practice
• Gain exposure to legal aid systems and justice access challenges
• Strengthen legal research and analytical skills
• Build cross-cultural communication and professional experience
• Enhance their CV or resume with international field experience

 

Accommodation and Cultural Experience

Participants stay with carefully selected local host families in Accra, providing an immersive cultural experience.

Accommodation includes:

• Private or shared room within a host family home
Three daily meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
• Opportunity to learn about Ghanaian culture, traditions, and daily life

Host family accommodation allows interns to experience authentic cultural exchange while remaining close to their internship placement.

 

Program Fee

The program fee is USD $1,600 for a 4-week internship.

This fee supports the coordination and delivery of the internship program and includes:

• Internship placement and coordination
• Professional supervision and mentoring
• Host family accommodation in Accra
• Three meals per day (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
• Airport pickup and arrival support
• Program orientation and cultural introduction
• Coordination of institutional visits and learning experiences
• Local program support throughout the internship
• Certificate of completion

 

Not Included

Participants are responsible for:

• International flights to Ghana
• Visa and travel insurance
• Personal expenses
• Optional travel or weekend excursions
• Any academic credit fees charged by their university

Professional Supervision & Mentorship


Interns receive structured supervision and mentorship throughout the program to ensure a meaningful learning experience.
• At the Legal Aid Commission, interns are supervised by Deborah Mensah legal officer, who guides interns during client consultations, legal documentation processes, and observation of legal aid services.
• Interns also receive mentorship from Yvonne Amegashie, Esq. Assistant Director at Legal Aid Commission, who provides professional guidance on legal procedures, human rights advocacy, and the functioning of Ghana’s legal aid system.
• The Pro-Passion Projects team provides program orientation, regular check-ins, and ongoing support to ensure interns receive structured feedback and professional development throughout the internship.

Eligibility

Applicants should meet one of the following:

• Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student
• Recent graduate
• Academic background or strong interest in law, human rights, political science, international relations, sociology, or related fields

No prior international experience is required.
