Job Description:
The Goldstein Family Student-Athlete Development Center is seeking graduate-level students interested in Higher Education, Social Services, Advising or Counseling to serve as Academic Success Coaches (ASCs) and work with a small cohort of student-athletes. The ASC would be exposed to all facets of the Athletic Academic Advising job, including but not limited to: meeting weekly with at-risk student-athletes to monitor academic wellness, managing study hall, working with NCAA Progress Towards Degree rules, connecting student-athletes to campus resources, helping them understand University processes/procedures, assisting with advising student-athletes regarding course registration and helping with programming and other initiatives of the office. Each Academic Success Coach will work collaboratively with one of our full-time advisors, so as to gain a breadth of experience across various sport programs we have here at Stony Brook, but also see the details on a micro scale of advising a set cohort. Academic Success Coaches will also meet as a group or with the academic advisor with whom they most closely work to share experiences and monitor their learning.
We are seeking graduate students who can commit to working between 13-20 hours per week, at least 3 days per week. Our office is open from 9 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday–Friday but flexibility in your schedule is preferred. We are hiring for the current semester with an opportunity to extend for future semesters contingent upon university budget approval and performance. To be done for internship/practicum credit or paid at an hourly rate of minimum wage in NY state.
The successful candidate must:
- Have strong organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills;
- Possess an interest in working with students on academic success strategies and tools, leading to holistic student success
- Be self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as a team member;
- Have the ability to multi-task and work in a dynamic office environment; and,
- Have the ability to work independently and take initiative.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist an Athletic Academic Advisor with the management of a small cohort of student-athletes across multiple teams by meeting weekly to discuss academic progress
- Keep detailed records and notes of students’ academic progress
- Meet and communicate regularly with direct supervisors
- Assist staff members with weekly reporting & data collection of appointments in the Goldstein Family Student Athlete Development Center
- As a group of interns, create and put on a Student Athlete Development related workshop in the 2nd semester
- Assistant with various programs and Student Athlete Development projects and initiatives
