Graduate Teaching Assistant: Introduction to Health and Health Behaviors (HS 2000-2050)


The Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences has several Graduate Teaching Assistantships available for the 2026-2027 academic year. This is a 20-hour a week teaching assistantship, ideal for students with an interest in health education or a career in academics. A 10-hour a week teaching assistantship may be available.


Position Responsibilities include:

  • Attending weekly HS 2000 (Introduction to Health and Health Behaviors) Lectures
  • Leading HS 2050 Learning Labs, small discussion and activity sessions for HS 2000 students
  • Grading assignments for the HS 2050 sections
  • Creating and presenting exam reviews for HS 2000 lectures
  • Meeting weekly with the HS 2000 teaching team
  • Giving one lecture in HS 2000 upon consultation with the faculty
  • Holding a weekly office hour to meet with students in their sections
  • Responding to student emails
  • Graduate Assistants (GAs) will be mentored by program faculty on the practice of teaching, learning, assessment, and classroom management.
  • They will gain experience independently leading discussion sessions and take an active role in planning and creating course activities and assignments for the Learning Labs.
  • GAs will be paired with an HS 2000 faculty member based on availability to attend lecture and lab sections. 
  • Students must be available for the following in the 2026-2027 academic year:

FALL
Lecture:   Monday/Wednesday 8:00am-9:15am or Tuesday/Thursday 1:00pm-2:15pm  
Two Learning Labs at the following times:
 Mon 10:00-10:50am, 12:00-12:50pm
 Tues 12:00-12:50pm, 3:00-3:50pm
 Wed 10:00-10:50am
 Thurs 12:00-12:50pm
 

WINTER 

Lecture: Monday/Wednesday 3:00pm-4:15pm or Tuesday/Thursday 8:00am-9:15am  Any two labs: Monday 4:45-5:35pm

Tuesday 10:00-10:50am, 12:00-12:50pm
Wednesday 12:00-12:50pm, 4:45-5:35pm
Thursday 12:00-12:50pm

Qualifications:
Graduate Assistants must be fully admitted and enrolled as a full-time student (minimum of 8 credit hours) for each semester of their appointment and maintain full-time status for the entire year in a graduate program. Graduate course work and/or research must contribute directly to the satisfaction of Oakland's degree requirements. Graduate assistants must have and maintain good academic standing (3.0 grade point average).
 
Tuition:
Tuition (four or eight credits per semester or a total of 8 to 16 credits) will be compensated, depending on whether students are a 10- or 20-hour position. Any additional credits and class fees, including books, will be the responsibility of the student.  
 
Compensation:
Student will receive a paycheck (via direct deposit if desired) on the last business day of each month for the duration of the assistantship.
