Position Overview
The Workforce Development Intern will support the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (BSAS) within the Workforce Development team. This internship focuses on practice improvement through training and technical assistance (TTA) that supports substance use treatment and recovery providers across the Commonwealth.
The intern will work closely with BSAS staff on projects related to workforce training design, evaluation, and coordination. This includes supporting efforts to strengthen the quality, consistency, and accessibility of training and TTA, align learning initiatives with BSAS standards and evidence-informed practice, and improve how training efforts are planned and assessed.
All work is grounded in BSAS Core Values, including equity, access, dignity, and person-centered care.
The internship will also include guided exposure to the responsible and ethical use of emerging tools, such as AI, to support public health work in ways that are transparent, thoughtful, and supportive of, not a replacement for human judgment and compassion.
Responsibilities
- Support the development and organization of training and technical assistance materials
- Assist with reviewing and summarizing feedback and evaluation data from training initiatives
- Help document and track workforce development and practice improvement projects
- Conduct background research to support training design, practice guidance, and improvement efforts
- Assist with coordination tasks related to meetings, learning initiatives, and project timelines
- Support efficiency and learning through responsible use of tools and technology, with attention to ethics, privacy, and equity
- Participate in team meetings and reflective learning conversations to build skills in workforce development and public health systems
Skills & Qualifications
- Interest in public health, workforce development, training, or practice improvement
- Strong organizational and written communication skills
- Ability to synthesize information and summarize key themes
- Comfort working independently and collaboratively in a professional setting
- Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks
- Interest in racial equity, culturally responsive practice, and advancing access and quality within public health systems
- Familiarity with or interest in adult learning, evaluation, or ethical approaches to innovation is a plus
