DPH Paid Internship Program, Fall 2026-Spring 2027

Project Name:  Evaluation of Health Care Facility Licensure and Regulatory Compliance in Massachusetts 

Intern Title: Policy Assistant Intern 

Eligible Academic Level: Bachelor’s

Position Overview:  

The Policy Assistant will assist the Bureau’s Director of Policy and Health Communications and the Deputy Director of Policy with analyzing the impact of statutes, regulations, policies, and standards. You will organize, maintain, and update existing policies and evaluate their effectiveness on a continuous basis. You will assist in assessing the need to develop new regulations or to revise existing regulations, assessing the probable impacts of regulatory change, and developing an implementation strategy to ensure compliance with regulations and statutes. Additionally, you will assist in supporting the Bureau’s boards and commissions including development of agendas and meeting materials. Furthermore, the Policy Assistant will assist the Bureau’s Public Records Team with timely and accurate processing of public record requests and the record retention process. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the development of Bureau-wide policies, procedures and regulations. 
  • Coordinate legislative tasks with the Director of Policy and Deputy Director of Policy, including the tracking of mandated legislative reports; the development of mandated legislative reports in a timely manner to allow for review and submission based on statutory deadlines; monitoring of legislative hearings and tracking of legislation; and assist in drafting written comments on pending legislation. 
  • Provide policy support for Bureau programs and initiatives. 
  • Provide support to the Bureau’s boards and commissions through development of agendas and meeting materials, and preparing meeting minutes 
  • Track and respond to requests for public records in accordance with State Public Records Laws as well as DPH policies and procedures. 

 

Skills & Qualifications: 

  • Capacity to work under specified deadlines in a dynamic environment. 
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to clearly, concisely, logically, accurately, and persuasively in written, verbal, and visual formats in internal, external and public settings. 
  • Ability to understand, apply and interpret the laws, regulations, policies and standards in Massachusetts, and pertinent federal laws and regulations. 
  • Ability to research information affecting a broad range of substantive topics.
