About the Role

We are offering a summer internship on our Legal Team, focused on team organization, contract processes, and legal research, beginning at the start of the intern’s Summer 2026 semester and concluding before the intern’s following semester. As our Legal Team Intern, you’ll be mentored by our Senior Counsel.

Ideal candidates are seeking to enhance their understanding of in-house legal team operations, contract management, and domestic & international regulatory research. The ideal summer intern is a junior or senior who has gained familiarity with basic legal concepts before starting the internship, demonstrates initiative, and is highly organised.

This internship is designed to provide real-world experience, which will add professional context to the intern’s specialized academic program for the next academic semester. We offer hands-on training during this internship which will enrich the educational experience.

The intern will gain valuable experience by:

  • Analysing samples of existing contracts
  • Conducting research on regulatory licensing requirements and processes globally
  • Helping maintain and improve templates and signature workflows
  • Supporting the design and implementation of a structured knowledge base for the Legal Team
  • Proofreading and assisting with basic drafting tasks
  • Producing clear written summaries and occasional presentations for non-legal stakeholders
  • Conducting preliminary research on intellectual property (IP) law topics relevant to the company's business
  • Summarising key case law, regulatory changes, and international IP filing requirements
  • Performing ad hoc tasks as necessary

The ideal intern is familiar with the following programs used in our office:

  • Slack and Google apps
  • Notion
  • Docusign
  • Asana

The ideal intern already has these required skills:

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Independence, initiative and critical problem solving skills
  • Strong legal research skills (case law, statutes/regulations, guidance)
  • Solid proofreading and drafting skills
  • Excellent organization skills and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently with good judgment and follow-through

Qualified candidates meet the following expectations:

  • Understands the necessity of maintaining discretion and confidentiality.
  • Will have familiarity with basic legal concepts before starting the internship.
  • You can produce clear, well-structured work product (memos, summaries, trackers) and keep projects organized.
  • Bachelor’s degree in progress, with a major in pre-law or law (or related fields such as legal studies or business law) a plus.

This is an unpaid internship with academic credit available. This internship requires 20-24 hours per week, and is hybrid remote/on-site in our New York City office. Internships with Shift are conducted without entitlement to a paid job at the conclusion of the internship.
