Safety Intern (Summer 2026)
Bowen Engineering’s Safety Intern assists the safety management team in the planning and directing of Bowen’s safety program to ensure a safe, healthy and accident-free work environment on every project. The Internship position is located at our job sites which is assigned prior to their start date.
The Safety Intern will have the opportunity to learn and observe the following:
CHAIN OF COMMAND – Assist in the coordination of daily safety planning and directives with the Project Superintendent. Any issues that cannot be resolved at that level should be communicated to the Site Safety Manager. In the event resolution/agreement cannot be reached contact the Project Manager and/or the Safety Director to assist with problem resolution.
KNOWLEDGE OF SAFETY - Read, understand and enforce the OSHA Standards and company safety policies for the purpose of establishing a safe work environment on all projects. Consult with Bowen Site Safety Manager or Bowen Safety Manager for any technical information required to best implement the safety program consistently.
NEW HIRE ORIENTATIONS – Conduct new hire orientations and assist in completing required HR paperwork.
PROJECT SUPPORT – Assist in development of site specific programs and plans. Observe the work being performed in the field the majority of the time, approximately 90% + of the time and identifies safety issues and recommends solutions. Communicate all observations, interventions, OFI’s to Site Safety Manager. Periodically conduct daily Safety Meetings and participate in Foreman toolbox meetings focusing on topics relevant to the scope of work being performed. Assist in coaching employees on all opportunities for improvement. Interact with work group to promote a unified safety culture. Perform other duties, as necessary.
SUBCONTRACTOR PRE-PLANNING – Assist Site Safety Manager with pre-construction safety plans required for our subcontractors.
PLANNING – Participate in project pre-planning meetings, to ensure that safety is part of all work plans. Assist foreman with pre-task analysis documents and ensure that documents have been completed and are adequate.
EQUIPMENT & SAFETY SUPPLIES – Assist the Site Safety Manager understand/learn the operation of equipment, including safety equipment, in order to educate/train the field staff on the proper use and operation. Ensure that equipment and tool inspections are being performed including but not limited to aerial lifts, back hoes, forklifts, cranes, fire extinguishers, portable power tools. Ensure that operators are qualified and have appropriate training, licensing for the use of such equipment. Ensure that personal protective equipment/supplies are in stock and available. Communicate with the Site Safety Manager for items that need to be purchased. Purchase and/or rent all first aid supplies and equipment; discuss all purchases with the Site Safety Manager and/or the Project Manager. Verify with the Bowen Shop for surplus safety supplies and equipment.
INCIDENT REPORTING – Assist in incident/accident investigations. Analyze to determine cause and develop safety measures and/or training to prevent incidents from recurring.
INSPECTION – Conduct project safety inspections at the jobsite for self-perform and subcontractor work. Inspections shall be completed or input into the Safety inspection Software Program. Assist in the timely correction of deficiencies brought forth by Superintendent and Foremen’s.
TRAINING – Assist in the training of employees on a variety of safety topics utilizing the company and/or project site specific training materials. Assist with periodic safety training for Superintendents and Foremen. Train and mentor all staff as needed.
DOCUMENTATION –
- Assist in document control/record keeping in the lines of tool inspection, equipment inspection, alerting of new chemicals on site to update MSDS/SDS, and employee training records.
- Complete a daily report to summarizing the day’s activities, challenges or concerns.
- Assist in maintaining and submitting first aid logs monthly.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Currently enrolled in a four (4) year bachelor’s degree program in Safety Management, or related field of study
- Working knowledge of safe work practices and governmental standards
- Communicate adequately in both verbal and written forms to communicate with others and convey information effectively
- Reading comprehension – must understand written sentences and paragraphs in work related information
- Active listener – must be able to give full attention and understand points that are being made without interruption, and asking appropriate questions
- Judgment – must be able to make decisions that are both best for employee as well as the company while considering the benefits and costs associated
- Awareness – must be able to see the whole picture and multi task
- Leadership – must show leadership skills and be willing to invoke such skills when needed
