Community Engagement Internship
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT INTERNSHIP
This internship is funded by the East Lansing Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and will provide experience to an individual in the areas of community development, placemaking, urban and regional planning, economic development, event management, and marketing. Responsibilities range from community engagement activities, placemaking infrastructure management, event management, data collection, and assisting with innovative placemaking programming.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Engage with community members, visitors, and businesses within downtown East Lansing.
- Facilitate and manage events.
- Host biweekly Friday evening concerts in downtown East Lansing.
- Execute data collection activities.
- Assist with brainstorming placemaking programming and activities.
- Maintain placemaking infrastructure (e.g., setup/breakdown, cleaning, etc.)
- Assist with implementing placemaking activities, including pop-up events and other public space activation strategies.
This position will work under the direction of the Community & Economic Development Department staff. The hours will vary weekly and average approximately 20 hours per week May 4, 2026 – August 29, 2026. Due to the nature of this position, individuals must be available to staff downtown concerts on the following Friday evenings 5:30PM-8:30PM:

REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Preference for those pursuing a bachelor's or advanced degree in a related discipline.
- Must have strong problem-solving skills, ability to speak to the public, and a willingness to learn and work as part of a team.
To perform the essential functions of the job, an individual may be required to stay in one period for prolonged periods of time as well as travel between sites within the City, work in both indoor and outdoor environments, handle moderately heavy (25 – 40 pounds) bags/boxes/equipment, operate assigned office equipment including computers, and communicate effectively with both City employees and the public.
