Office of the President/CEO Internship

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT/CEO INTERNSHIP

The Office of the President/CEO is seeking a highly motivated and analytical Summer 2026 Intern to conduct strategic research on key issues impacting the electric utility industry and the members served by Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) and its Affiliates. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work directly on executive-level initiatives that inform long-term planning, policy discussions, and cooperative strategy. The selected intern will research and analyze emerging trends, economic pressures, regulatory considerations, and technological advancements shaping the future of electric cooperatives. 

This is a paid opportunity with a remote work option.

 

The intern will conduct research and develop executive-ready summaries on the following focus areas: 

  • Affordability & Electricity: Energy burden analysis, rate pressures, and savvy economic strategies to maintain affordable service. 
  • Economic Development: Research and exploration on utility and related industry business case studies, economic development strategies and forward outlook. 
  • Grid Modernization: Smart grid technologies, infrastructure investment trends, cybersecurity, and system resilience. 
  • Digital Divide: Rural broadband access gaps, economic development implications, and the role of electric cooperatives in expanding connectivity 
  • Energy Resources – Emerging technologies - Overview, economic feasibility, regulatory considerations, and potential future role in energy portfolios. 

Qualifications 

  • Current graduate student in Economics, Public Policy, Energy Systems, Business, Engineering, Finance, or related field 
  • Strong research, analytical, and critical thinking skills 
  • Proficiency in data analysis and presentation tools (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Skilled in use of generative AI and capable of developing infographic materials for presentation 
  • Ability to synthesize complex information into clear executive summaries 
  • Interest in the energy sector and public utility operations 

Responsibilities 

  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative research using industry reports, academic publications, regulatory filings, and market data 
  • Analyze data and identify trends relevant to REC’s strategic priorities 
  • Develop executive-level briefing materials and presentations 
  • Prepare summary memos outlining key findings and recommendations 
  • Present research findings to senior leadership 
  • Collaborate with internal subject matter experts across departments
