TITLE:    Staff Accountant 

 

General Summary

The Staff Accountant is an FLSA exempt position and will be responsible for supporting the financial and accounting functions of the County Road Association of Michigan (CRA) and its affiliated entities as a direct report of the Director of Finance and Administration.  The typical duties stated below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work and are an exhaustive list of all the duties and responsibilities.

 

This position is a full-time, in-person position at our office located two blocks from the State Capitol. CRA works with all 83 county road agencies advocating for legislation and effective practices that work best for 75% of Michigan’s road system. The CRA Board and its committees work together to develop educational programming, position papers, share industry knowledge and best practices, and collaborate on road maintenance and preservation. This position is 60% financial and 40% administrative.

 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Post customer payments by recording ACH/wire transactions, credit cards, and paper checks, and assist with the processing of daily bank deposits along with making bank deposits.
  2. Complete various financial reports and tasks as assigned.
  3. Assist with audit fieldwork preparation by organizing supporting documents, reconciling accounts, and responding to auditor inquiries for all entities. 
  4. Maintain and monitor vendor files for proper W-9 documentation and tax classification; assist in the generation and distribution of annual 1099 forms in compliance with IRS regulations.
  5. Track revenues and expenditures related to grants, special projects, and contracts; assist in preparing reimbursement requests and financial reporting.
  6. Support the management and financial oversight of the Political Action Committee, including maintaining accurate financial records, reconciling contributions and expenditures, ensuring compliance with applicable state campaign finance laws and submission of quarterly reports to the State of Michigan Bureau of Elections.
  7. Maintain and manage the credit card reconciliation reports for the staff by verifying receipts and coding transactions.
  8. Assist in the preparation of meetings and events including travel arrangements, budgeting, invoicing, and on-site coordination; frequently attend such events.
  9. Perform vital office duties such as: managing office phone calls, incoming/outgoing mail, supplies inventory, and provide excellent hospitality to visitors.
  10. Work collaboratively with the CRA team to support the goals of the organization.

 

Required Qualifications / Skills, Knowledge, Abilities

  • A four-year degree (or equivalent) in accounting, finance and/or administration, or applicable area (preferred).
  • 1+ years experience in accounting or financial processes – demonstrated knowledge of basic business and accounting principles/standards.
  • 2+ years experience in a member-driven association or non-profit (preferred).
  • Proficient knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Excel including the ability to work within spreadsheets and databases.
  • High attention to detail and demonstrated ability to follow standard operating procedures.
  • Friendly, energetic and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in other office skills such as filing, organizing, communicating and operating routine office equipment. 
  • Experience with Association Management Software (AMS) or Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems desired.
  • Must be willing to travel 5-10% (in Michigan).
