Actuarial Intern (Summer)
This position supports the Actuarial department within our medical professional liability line of business.
This is an on-site Internship working in our Birmingham, AL office.
Hours are 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday–Friday (37.5 total hours), but we may have some flexibility. The internship typically runs from May through August, though start and end dates are flexible.
The goal of our Internship Program is to provide students with meaningful, hands-on experience and exposure to real-world business applications of actuarial concepts within the insurance industry.
The Intern will be exposed to a collaborative, professional environment and work closely with experienced team members to gain hands-on exposure to actuarial and financial concepts related specifically to medical professional liability insurance.
Under the guidance of the Actuarial team, the Intern will gain experience primarily in the ratemaking aspect of insurance for physicians, surgeons, and hospitals. Training will be provided, and no prior actuarial or technical experience is required.
What’ll you’ll do
- Assist with ratemaking analyses related to medical professional liability insurance
- Use Excel, Access, and SQL to perform actuarial and data-related analyses (training provided)
- Support routine and ad hoc analytical and research projects within the Actuarial department
- Assist with gathering and validating data used in actuarial and financial reporting
- Gain exposure to financial reporting as it relates to an insurance company

- Current enrollment in a degree program
- Interest in an actuarial science career path
- Demonstrated analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail and ability to work on multiple assignments simultaneously
- Willingness to learn new software tools and technical concepts
- Ability to work effectively within a team setting as well as independently when appropriate
- Availability to work during standard business hours within the agreed-upon schedule
Additional Information
- Interns are paid $16 per hour
- Interns are responsible for their own housing and transportation while in Birmingham, AL
- Offers are contingent upon completion of a background check with acceptable results
- Approximately 240 team members work out of our Birmingham office, and 12 of our 22 Actuarial team members are based in this location
