Research Intern – Advanced Food Processing Technologies

This research internship focuses on the development of cryoconcentrated extracts from native Chilean plants—calafate (Berberis microphylla) and matico (Buddleja globosa)—with enhanced health-promoting bioactivities. The project applies advanced food processing technologies, including centrifugal- and ultrasound-assisted block freeze concentration, to improve the concentration and preservation of bioactive compounds. Interns will gain hands-on experience in laboratory-based research, food science methodologies, and data analysis while contributing to innovative solutions in functional foods and natural health products.

Based on previous work and research knowledge, suggested tasks could include:

  • Assist in the preparation and processing of plant extracts using block freeze concentration techniques, including centrifugal- and ultrasound-assisted methods.
  • Support experimental trials aimed at optimizing processing parameters to enhance the concentration and stability of bioactive compounds.
  • Participate in laboratory analyses to evaluate physicochemical properties and bioactive potential (e.g., antioxidant or antimicrobial activity) of cryoconcentrated extracts.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze experimental data, ensuring accurate documentation of procedures and results.
  • Conduct literature reviews related to functional foods, cryoconcentration technologies, and bioactive compounds from medicinal plants.
  • Assist in the preparation of research reports, figures, and summaries for internal meetings, academic dissemination, or publication.
  • Collaborate with faculty members, researchers, and fellow students while also working independently on assigned tasks.
  • Follow laboratory safety protocols and contribute to maintaining an organized and efficient research environment.

About the Organization

This institute focuses its efforts on research, playing a fundamental role as a driving force for research and its collaboration with the various institutes, centers, and faculties of the University. This space has been conceived to enhance the scientific and technological development not only of the university but also of the country, with state-of-the-art laboratories, high-standard equipment, and spaces specially designed for the collaborative work of our researchers. It concentrates capabilities in strategic areas for national and international scientific innovation. The center is designed to foster collaborative work among research teams, as well as environments conducive to the emergence of ideas that contribute to society.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS

On-site Supervision and Support

Our internships include 24/7 on-site staff to support students working and living abroad. All students will also report to a supervisor at their internship site. Supervisors provide and oversee daily tasks, introduce the intern to team members, and mentor the intern in organizational agility, skill acquisition, and career readiness. Interns complete a midpoint and final evaluation, and supervisors complete a final evaluation of their interns. All work responsibilities and projects are approved in advance.

Academic Credit

Students on an internship have the opportunity to enroll in their home university for credit, or enroll in a course through API to transfer back to their university for credit. Email support-internships@apiexperience.com for more information and a syllabus.

Housing and Excursions

Housing and excursions are included in your internship and will be selectable during the application process.
