FY 2027 Assistant Teacher- Briya Charter Public School

Assistant Teachers are part of the adult education team at Briya Public Charter School — a leading two-generation education program serving immigrant parents and their young children in Washington, D.C. Briya is a Tier One Public Charter School, consistently achieving the highest educational outcomes through its innovative, family-centric programming.
The core adult education program is comprised of three highly integrated areas of study: English, parenting, and digital literacy. The curriculum prepares students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to navigate their community as effective parents, employees, and citizens. Our integrated ESL-DL-Child Development adult education classes are taught by a Lead Teacher and an Associate Teacher. Briya offers a learning environment with a variety of technology available to enhance daily lessons and activities.  Briya also offers high quality early education for children 0-5 and workforce development programs for advanced adult students who wish to pursue career-ready certifications.
Briya has a strategic partnership with Mary’s Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center, further strengthening student families with comprehensive medical, dental, and social services.

 

Teaching
Collaborate with lead-teachers to:
• Implement learning activities with individual students, small groups and the whole class.
• Provide quality instruction that fosters an academic learning climate, actively supports teaching and learning, and implements the ESL and DL Standards & Curriculum and Child Development curriculum with fidelity. 
• Circulate during class lessons to check student comprehension, identify further areas of need, provide encouragement and assist students who may require more support.
• Work closely with the Lead Teachers and Briya CASAS Coordinator to implement standardized testing and provide one-on-one tutoring as needed.  
• Utilize effective teaching strategies that provide opportunities for student learning and active engagement in the learning process. For example, adapt lessons that utilize technology to adequately teach all students in the classroom, differentiating as needed.  
• Meet the needs of above-level students and those not making reasonable progress toward achieving personal and school goals; this may include one-on-one support, pull out classes and referrals to student services.
• Review and provide feedback on student work (homework, tests, google classroom assignments, etc) if deemed appropriate or as needed by the Lead Teacher 
• Provide a safe and orderly learning environment in the classroom.
Planning
• Associate teachers may have the opportunity to assume greater responsibility in designing and leading in-class lesson and activities for students. This process includes:
• Creating learning activities and lesson plans that follow best practices in instructional design by including clear objectives, instructional activities with differentiated instruction, and assessments that are appropriate to the skill levels, needs, and interests of the students in the program.  
• Designing authentic learning experiences that develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to be effective workers, parents/family members, and community members/citizens.

Classroom Technology
• Regularly and consistently, utilize classroom technology to enhance student education and further personal and professional goals through blended and online learning.
• Work closely with Briya IT Technicians to maintain student computers and other on-site technology equipment (hardware and software). 
• Ensure proper use of classroom technology during class at all times (ie. No food or drink).

Collaboration – Meet formally once a week and informally throughout the week with Supervisor to:
• Discuss unit and daily lesson plans and reflect and assess class’s progress
• Discuss individual student concerns
• Discuss teaching development
• Ensure class administrative duties are completed.
Data and other administrative duties
• Create and maintain student accounts for online learning platforms, such as Google for Education. 
• Create and maintain content in Google Classroom and develop educational technology materials for classes
• In collaboration with the Lead Teacher, daily, track attendance and communicate with students who are absent.  Communicate with Briya colleagues in Administration and Early Childhood about any students with attendance concerns.  Work with Briya team to meet class enrollment and in-seat attendance targets.
• Work with Lead Teachers, Early Childhood and Administration to maintain records of individual student Briya Reading Journal completion.
• Provide input to the Lead Teacher for Student-Teacher Conferences to discuss the families’ goals and progress.
Student Support & Other Duties
Refer students to Student Services Coordinator as needed.
• Assist with student recruitment, student registrations, and special events such as field trips, graduation and other school-based celebrations. 
• Participate in all required staff meetings, trainings, and retreats.

Professional Development
• Work closely with Supervisor to identify areas of strength and weakness in the classroom and address these areas as needed.
• Increase ESL, digital literacy and child development skills and knowledge 
• Share knowledge with and learn from AE colleagues during PD events, class observations and material reviews
