Communications Intern (Summer 2026)
Richmond, VA (Hybrid) | Approximately 20 hours per week
JLV Communications is a proud participant in the InternshipsVA program and is a boutique public relations and marketing firm serving clients across economic development, nonprofit and corporate sectors. The firm specializes in strategic communications, marketing and media relations.
JLV Communications is seeking a Communications Intern to support client and internal projects while developing practical, career-ready skills in public relations, marketing and business operations.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES & SKILL DEVELOPMENT
Through this internship, the selected candidate will:
- Build professional communication and writing skills in a client-facing environment
- Develop research and analytical skills to support strategic communications
- Strengthen writing skills across a variety of materials, including summaries, media materials, social content and client-ready communications
- Gain experience translating information into clear, actionable deliverables
- Strengthen organization, time management and project coordination skills
- Learn how communications strategies support business goals
- Gain exposure to agency operations, client management and workflow systems
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Draft and edit written materials, including summaries, media content, social posts and client communications
- Attend client meetings and document key takeaways and action items
- Conduct research to support communications strategies (data, trends, insights)
- Assist in building media lists and background materials for outreach
- Proofread and edit communications materials for clarity and accuracy
- Support development of surveys and feedback tools using Google Forms
- Assist in evaluating internal tools and processes to improve efficiency
- Provide general administrative and project support to the team
- Upload press releases to newswire
MENTORSHIP & SUPERVISION
The intern will work closely with JLV’s senior team, receiving regular feedback, guidance and mentorship. The experience is designed to provide structured learning, professional development and exposure to multiple areas of the communications field.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current rising junior or senior college student studying communications
- Basic understanding of public relations, marketing or communications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Highly organized with attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines
- Interest in public relations, marketing or client services
- The motivation and drive to work independently in a remote environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
- Must have access to a personal laptop
PROGRAM DETAILS
- Dates: June 1, 2026 – August 7, 2026
- Schedule: Approximately 20 hours per week
- Location: Hybrid (Richmond, VA area)
- Compensation: $15/hour
PREFERRED (NOT REQUIRED)
- Familiarity with LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook
- Experience with Canva or similar design tools
- AI experience creating custom GPTs
