Overdose Epidemiology Intern

PLEASE NOTE: Although this posting may display a longer availability window on Handshake due to system requirements, applications for this internship must be submitted by June 12th.

Description: The Kent County Health Department (KCHD) publishes monthly data reports on its website exploring overdose and overdose deaths in Kent County. KCHD and their Overdose Epidemiologist are trying to incorporate data dashboards to streamline data sharing and make these data more understandable and accessible to the community. We are looking for an intern to work with KCHD epidemiologists to develop public-facing dashboards for overdose deaths and opioid settlement spending in Kent County. The student will have the opportunity to attend meetings with KCHD community partners, including the Kent County Opioid Task Force (KCOTF). The student might also have the opportunity to assist with project management of opioid settlement initiatives and attending outreach events with KCHD/KCOTF staff. This project will offer the student a variety of experiences in local overdose prevention efforts.

Importance to Public Health: This internship will increase KCHD capacity to visualize and communicate overdose-related data to the public while offering the student the opportunity to apply their education to a real-world setting. At the end of the internship, the student will better understand the day-to-day operations of a local health department and the role of epidemiologists in data analysis, visualization, and communication. The interdisciplinary and collaborative nature of the KCOTF will also allow the student to network with and learn about other organizations and community partners.

-Published dashboards visualizing overdose death data and tracking opioid settlement spending in Kent County
