AI Systems Intern

Job Title AI Systems Intern — KCSA AI Lab

Location Hybrid / Remote Flexible

About the Role KCSA is building an AI-native communications infrastructure designed to augment and modernize the practice of public relations and investor relations. Our internal AI Lab develops tools focused on narrative intelligence, relationship intelligence, workflow automation, reporting analytics, and operational visibility across the agency.

We are seeking an AI Systems Intern to help operationalize, maintain, test, improve, and scale this ecosystem. This internship is a full-time position with the potential to grow into a permanent role for the right candidate.

This is not a traditional engineering role and not a generic "prompt engineering" role. We are looking for someone who thinks in systems, workflows, structure, and operational clarity — someone comfortable working at the intersection of communications, product operations, AI tools, and data-driven workflows.

You will work directly with a KCSA Managing Partner to lead, support and evolve a growing suite of internal tools including:

  • Narrative intelligence systems
  • Media relationship management tools
  • AI-powered reporting and analytics platforms
  • Workflow orchestration systems
  • Internal operational dashboards and event pipelines

The ideal candidate has a background that bridges communications or journalism and technical AI experience — someone who understands how stories and information flow, and who has also gotten their hands dirty building something with AI.

What You'll Do

AI Workflow Operations & QA

  • Test and validate AI-powered workflows across internal tools
  • Identify edge cases, broken routing, inconsistent outputs, and operational failures
  • Monitor tool performance, usage patterns, and reliability
  • Help improve prompt structures and system instructions over time

Systems & Taxonomy Management

  • Maintain consistency across event naming, metadata structures, and workflow definitions
  • Assist in managing internal data hygiene and operational integrity
  • Help document system architecture, workflows, and AI governance standards
  • Support efforts to standardize operational logic across multiple tools

Product & Workflow Support

  • Translate real-world communications workflows into structured operational requirements
  • Partner with account teams to identify friction points and improvement opportunities
  • Help onboard internal users and improve adoption of AI systems
  • Surface insights and recommendations based on usage and workflow patterns

AI Tool Coordination

  • Work across tools including Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor, Replit, and API-based systems
  • Assist with lightweight configuration, troubleshooting, integrations, and prompt iteration
  • Support internal testing of new AI-driven products and workflows

Reporting & Intelligence Support

  • Analyze operational data and event streams to identify trends and opportunities
  • Help support ROI measurement and internal reporting initiatives
  • Contribute to the evolution of KCSA's narrative intelligence infrastructure

Qualifications

We're Looking For Someone Who:

  • Has hands-on experience building an AI system of any kind — this is a hard requirement
  • Brings a background in communications, journalism, media, or a related field
  • Thinks naturally in systems and workflows
  • Is highly detail-oriented and operationally disciplined
  • Enjoys organizing information and improving processes
  • Can move comfortably between strategy discussions and hands-on operational work
  • Is comfortable learning new tools quickly and experimenting independently

Preferred Experience

  • Coursework or experience in computer science, data science, or a related technical field
  • Familiarity with AI platforms and workflows (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.)
  • Comfort working with spreadsheets, structured data, APIs, JSON, and lightweight technical tooling
  • Exposure to no-code/low-code environments is a plus
  • Basic understanding of SQL, databases, or automation workflows is helpful but not required

What This Role Is Not

This is not:

  • a pure software engineering role
  • a social media role
  • a content-generation role
  • a generic "AI enthusiast" position

We are looking for someone who can help build operational infrastructure around AI systems and communications workflows.

Why This Role Matters

KCSA's AI Lab is building systems designed to modernize how communications organizations manage:

  • narrative intelligence
  • relationship intelligence
  • operational analytics
  • institutional knowledge
  • workflow orchestration

This internship is an opportunity to help shape that foundation from the inside — and to grow with it.

Compensation: Internship will be paid $15/hour
