Traffic Engineering Intern (Summer 2026)

Duration: Immediate Start – September 1, 2026
Employment Type: Temporary Summer Internship
Pay Rate: $20/hour on W2

Work hours: 20 hour/week

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated Traffic Engineering Intern to support transportation and traffic operations initiatives through data collection, analysis, and reporting. This internship offers hands-on experience working with traffic monitoring systems, travel-time studies, roadway performance analysis, and transportation engineering projects. The ideal candidate is a Civil Engineering student with an interest in transportation engineering, traffic operations, and data analytics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct travel-time studies and collect traffic performance data along designated routes. 
  • Monitor, access, and record traffic activity using remote CCTV systems. 
  • Retrieve and analyze traffic data from side-fire radar and other traffic detection technologies. 
  • Perform probe data route analysis to evaluate travel times, congestion patterns, and roadway performance. 
  • Analyze traffic trends, traffic volumes, speeds, and operational patterns. 
  • Maintain and organize traffic data using Excel and Google Sheets. 
  • Utilize ARCH and other transportation management systems to access and extract traffic-related information. 
  • Assist with traffic engineering studies, operational assessments, and transportation planning activities. 
  • Support preparation of reports, presentations, and recommendations based on data findings. 
  • Conduct field visits as needed to collect and validate traffic data. 

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in one of the following universities: 
    • Utah State University 
    • University of Utah 
    • Brigham Young University 
    • Utah Valley University 
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, preferably with a focus on Transportation Engineering. 
  • Valid driver's license with a safe driving record. 
  • Reliable access to a personal vehicle. 
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills in English. 
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets for data analysis and reporting. 
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience conducting travel-time studies or collecting transportation-related data. 
  • Familiarity with remote access and recording of CCTV traffic camera systems. 
  • Experience navigating and utilizing ARCH or similar transportation management systems. 
  • Knowledge of side-fire radar technology and traffic data extraction. 
  • Experience performing traffic pattern analysis and probe data route analysis. 
  • Understanding of geometric highway design principles, traffic signage, and sight-distance requirements. 
  • Coursework or practical experience in transportation engineering, traffic operations, or traffic safety.
