PTS College Intern, City Manager's Office

The City of Santa Clarita is committed to providing a challenging and meaningful work experience for college students. The City offers unique opportunities for students to gain hands-on and in-depth experience in a variety of disciplines related to local, regional, state, and federal government operations.  We provide real-world work assignments, which provide interns the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional City staff committed to teamwork and providing superior municipal services to the community of Santa Clarita.

 

The chosen candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to projects within the City Manager’s Office related to City Management, Intergovernmental Relations, Legislative Matters, and Public Safety.

 

SALARY:                             

$20.06 – $25.41/hour (Undergrad Level)

$26.78 - $32.13/hour (Graduate Level)

 

This position is expected to work approximately 30 hours per week. The anticipated duration of the internship is approximately 6 to 12 months, but may end earlier or be extended depending on department needs.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Tracks and organizes all state and federal legislation related to the City
  • Develops reports and position letters on legislation of interest to the City
  • Reviews meeting agendas of other public agencies, including the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Los Angeles County Probation Oversight Commission, and the Southern California Association of Governments
  • Ensures the City’s legislation website is up to date
  • Assists with budget analysis, monitoring, and forecasting
  • Researches and applies for grant opportunities related to public safety 
  • Prepares materials such as charts, graphics, and illustrations for presentations
  • Completes data analysis, prepares and presents reports and recommendations
  • Reviews and responds to questions and/or concerns from residents related to City administration issues and provides information accordingly
  • Establishes positive working relationships with City employees, outside agencies, and the Public
  • May provide administrative support, as needed

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise professional judgment, and conduct oneself ethically
  • Knowledge of basic budget management principles, expenditure monitoring, and forecasting methods
  • Proficient in research techniques, survey methods, data collection, and analysis
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and other computer programs to generate letters, spreadsheets, presentations, and reports
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to produce work that is accurate and complete
  • Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and documents weighing up to 25 pounds 

 

EDUCATION:

If you are currently an undergraduate student, graduate student, or recent graduate with a field of study of Public Administration, Political Science, or a related field, and are interested in gaining meaningful hands-on work experience at the local government level, this opportunity may be for you.

In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.
