Position Purpose
The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine invites applications for the Neurosurgical Oncology Summer Research Fellowship. This program provides a unique opportunity for medical students interested in neurosurgery, neuro-oncology, translational cancer research, and academic medicine.
Under the mentorship of faculty within the Neurosurgical Oncology Program, fellows will participate in clinical and translational research focused on primary and metastatic brain tumors. Research opportunities include projects involving glioblastoma, lower-grade glioma, meningioma, vestibular schwannoma, skull base tumors, pituitary tumors, brain metastases, and emerging therapies in neuro-oncology.
The fellowship is designed to provide exposure to all aspects of academic neurosurgery, including clinical research, translational investigation, multidisciplinary neuro-oncology care, scientific writing, and presentation of research findings.
Nature of Work
Fellows will work closely with faculty, residents, research staff, and medical students within the Department of Neurosurgery. Responsibilities may include:
- Participation in clinical outcomes and database research projects.
- Retrospective chart review and data abstraction.
- Development of research protocols and IRB submissions.
- Analysis of imaging, clinical, pathological, and molecular data.
- Participation in multidisciplinary neuro-oncology conferences and tumor boards.
- Statistical analysis and interpretation of study results.
- Preparation of abstracts, manuscripts, and scientific presentations.
- Collaboration on ongoing translational and laboratory-based neuro-oncology research projects when available.
- Engage in daily neurosurgical clinical activites including interaction with faculty, fellows, residents and other medical students
Students will receive mentorship regarding academic neurosurgery, residency preparation, scientific writing, and presentation skills.
Length of Employment: July 15, 2026 – August 31, 2026
Eligibility Requirements
Educational Background
- Currently enrolled at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.
- Medical student in good academic standing.
- Strong interest in neurosurgery, neuro-oncology, neuroscience, oncology, or translational research.
Research Skills and Experience
- Basic understanding of scientific methodology and research principles.
- Familiarity with literature review and scientific writing.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel, REDCap, or similar data management tools preferred.
- Prior research experience is preferred but not required
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
- Ability to analyze scientific literature and clinical data.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow research protocols.
- Interest in developing critical thinking and research methodology skills.
Communication Skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team.
- Professionalism in interactions with faculty, trainees, and staff.
Personal Qualities
- Intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm for neurosurgery and neuro-oncology.
- Dependability, professionalism, and strong work ethic.
- Commitment to ethical conduct in clinical and scientific research.
Availability
- Ability to commit a minimum of 25 hours per week during the summer.
- Full-time participation is strongly encouraged.
Fellowship Expectations
Fellows will be expected to:
- Participate in weekly research meetings.
- Attend multidisciplinary brain tumor conferences and neuro-oncology tumor boards.
- Complete at least one scholarly project suitable for abstract or manuscript submission.
- Present their work at the conclusion of the fellowship.
Compensation
$5,000 stipend paid out in two lump sums of $2,500 at the start and end of the fellowship.
Stipend: $5,000 for the summer, paid in two installments of $2,500 at the beginning and conclusion of the fellowship period.
