Business Automation Intern
Are you a college student looking to gain real-world experience in business automation, helping improve, document, and automate internal business processes across a company?
This position is ideal for someone early in their career with a background in information systems, business technology, business analytics, operations, or computer science who wants hands-on experience building real automation solutions that improve how a company operates.
This is not simply a technical support role. It is a business-process improvement role. The right person will be able to understand how work is being done today, ask why it is being done that way, determine whether it should be documented, automated, simplified, reassigned, or eliminated, and then help implement a better workflow.
The primary tools used will include Power Automate, SharePoint, Planner, Teams, Outlook, Microsoft Forms, and related Microsoft 365 applications. Experience with Power Apps, Power BI, Power Automate Desktop, or Copilot Studio is a plus.

This role will work closely with leadership and department leads to identify repetitive manual work, convert undocumented processes into clear procedures, and build practical automation solutions using the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. There will be an opportunity to extend part-time employment beyond the summer/fall, with the possibility of continued service for up to one year.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Review existing task logs, recurring responsibilities, and manual workflows to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Meet with non-technical employees and department leads to understand how work is currently performed.
- Translate business processes into clear workflow requirements.
- Help convert undocumented processes into SOPs, workflow maps, checklists, and repeatable procedures.
- Design, build, test, and maintain automated workflows using Power Automate.
- Create workflows involving approvals, notifications, reminders, task assignments, intake forms, status updates, and data capture.
- Use Microsoft 365 tools such as SharePoint, Planner, Teams, Outlook, and Forms to improve accountability and task tracking.
- Set up and maintain Planner boards and Teams-based workflows for internal projects and recurring tasks.
- Help identify whether a task should be automated, simplified, reassigned, or eliminated.
- Create current-state and future-state workflow maps.
- Maintain a workflow automation tracker showing project status, owner, priority, target date, expected benefit, and completion status.
- Test automations before rollout and confirm that workflows operate reliably.
- Troubleshoot and improve existing automations as business needs change.
- Provide light training and user instructions for employees using new workflows.
- Monitor completed automations and recommend improvements based on user feedback.
- Help leadership measure improvements such as time savings, reduced errors, improved accountability, and better visibility into work.
- Other duties as assigned by management.
Education And Skills
Required
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s program (Computer Information Systems, Information Technology, Business Analytics, Operations, Computer Science, or a related field). The ideal candidate is entering their senior year of school or has just graduated.
- Familiarity with Power Automate, Zapier or equivalent through coursework, internship experience, personal projects, certification, or professional experience.
- Comfort working within Microsoft 365, including Teams, SharePoint, Planner, Outlook, and Forms.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to process detail.
- Ability to document business processes clearly and turn informal knowledge into repeatable procedures.
- Ability to interview non-technical employees and translate their work into workflow requirements.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technology in practical business terms.
- Ability to organize work into project trackers with priorities, owners, deadlines, and completion status.
- Strong follow-through and a focus on completing practical improvements, not just analyzing them.
Preferred
- Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals certification, such as PL-900.
- Experience with Power Apps, Power BI, SharePoint Lists, Power Automate Desktop, Dataverse, or Copilot Studio.
- Internship, co-op, class project, or work sample involving workflow automation, process improvement, dashboards, apps, or business systems.
- Basic understanding of SharePoint list and library structures.
- Experience with ticketing systems, CRM systems, PSA systems, or business operations software.
- Exposure to process mapping, Lean, Six Sigma, business analysis, or operations improvement.
- Ability to create simple training guides, checklists, and user instructions.
Work Sample or Portfolio
Candidates should be prepared to discuss or provide an example of a project they have completed. This may include a class project, an internship project, a personal project, a workflow, an automation, a dashboard, an app, or a process-improvement example.

Please note that this Pittsburgh-based position requires candidates to live in the region due to weekly in-office attendance. Candidates must also be able to continue part-time work beyond the summer/fall, with potential employment for up to one year. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States, as the company does not sponsor internships.
Miscellaneous
- Part-time hours with flexibility in scheduling 16-24 hours per week, within our work week, Monday–Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
