Biology Active Learning Assistant

The Department of Biological Sciences in collaboration with the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning will pilot a program to integrate undergraduate Active Learning Assistants (ALAs) in to the BIO 1200 classrooms to facilitate real-time active learning activities during primary lecture hours.  ALAs will facilitate active learning by transforming the classroom into a network of small, collaborative student groups.  During active learning activities (e.g. case studies, concept mapping, or “clicker” challenge discussions), ALAs will circulate to provide immediate peer-to-peer support and mentoring.

We are looking to hire ALAs for this coming Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 semesters.

Responsibilities:

•  Participation in a pre-training that covers general pedagogy (inclusive teaching, effective communication) and content-specific topics
• Attend meetings to plan and prepare for each of the four active learning assignments.  These meetings will focus on identifying key challenges in each active learning assignment and approaches to facilitating student engagement.
• Participation in five class periods, including one introductory class and four active learning sessions
• Serving as a role model and peer mentor
