Financial Analyst Intern
Purpose of the Role
The Financial Analyst Intern supports Unity Bands’ financial planning, reporting, and decision-making by analyzing financial data, monitoring organizational performance, and helping leadership understand how resources are being used. As Unity Bands grows, this role helps strengthen budgeting, forecasting, financial controls, and the processes needed to support sustainable expansion.
Key Responsibilities
1. Financial Analysis & Advisory Support
- Analyze revenue, expenses, fundraising performance, and other financial activity to identify trends and areas requiring attention.
- Prepare financial summaries, reports, and recommendations for the Treasurer and organizational leadership.
- Support leadership in evaluating the financial impact of new initiatives, events, partnerships, and programs.
- Conduct research on nonprofit financial practices, funding models, and cost-management opportunities.
2. Budgeting & Forecasting
- Support the development and ongoing monitoring of Unity Bands’ annual operating budget.
- Compare actual financial performance against budgeted expectations and identify significant variances.
- Assist with financial forecasting to anticipate future revenue, expenses, and organizational funding needs.
- Work with department leaders to understand anticipated expenses and improve organizational resource planning.
3. Fundraising & Program Financial Analysis
- Track revenue and expenses associated with fundraising campaigns, events, and program initiatives.
- Analyze fundraising performance, including campaign costs, revenue generated, and overall financial return.
- Help leadership understand the financial sustainability of programs and organizational initiatives.
- Provide financial insights that support decisions around resource allocation and future investments.
4. Financial Reporting & Compliance Support
- Assist in preparing financial reports for leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Support the Treasurer in compiling and organizing documentation required for annual nonprofit filings, including Form 990 preparation.
- Help maintain accurate and accessible financial records.
- Assist in monitoring financial documentation to ensure transactions are properly supported and categorized.
5. Financial Process & Controls Development
- Help develop clear processes for submitting receipts, invoices, reimbursements, and other financial requests.
- Support the creation of systems for requesting, approving, and tracking organizational spending.
- Identify opportunities to improve financial workflows, reporting, and internal controls as the organization grows.
- Assist in documenting finance procedures to promote consistency and accountability.
6. Cross-Functional Financial Support
- Partner with Operations, Fundraising, Programs, and other departments to provide financial insight for organizational initiatives.
- Assist department leaders in understanding budget limitations and financial implications of proposed activities.
- Participate in finance-related meetings and track financial action items as needed.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or a related field.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
- Ability to organize, interpret, and communicate financial information clearly.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to confidentiality.
- Interest in nonprofit finance, organizational growth, and financial stewardship.
- Experience with financial modeling, budgeting, or data analysis is preferred but not required.
