Role Overview

Under the direct supervision of an RN and in accordance with organizational policies, unit guidelines and the Nurse Practice Act, the Graduate Nurse follows the core orientation pathway and participates in delivering patient care throughout the hospital stay. Responsibilities include assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care; coordination with other healthcare professionals; delegation to patient care assistants; and documentation of patient status and needs. Direct patient care employees must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Upon successful completion of the NCLEX and obtainment of an RN license, the Graduate Nurse will transition into a Registered Nurse role. NCLEX completion is required within eight weeks of graduation.

Education Requirements

• Associate degree, Diploma, BS or BSN from an accredited nursing program
• Proof of graduation required (transcript or letter from program director confirming completion and eligibility for boards)

Key Responsibilities

• Under RN supervision:
• Assess physical and developmental needs of patients
• Analyze assessment data to identify patient needs
• Document nursing history and age-appropriate physical and emotional needs
• Develop and manage individualized plans of care
• Delegate and evaluate therapeutic interventions
• Obtain vital signs and monitor patient condition
• Observe and document patient responses to treatments, medications and interventions
• Administer prescribed medications and treatments
• Explain procedures and treatments to patients and families
• Prepare equipment and assist physicians during exams and treatments
• Maintain patient comfort and safety
• Initiate patient education plans
• Respond to life-saving situations according to policy and protocol
• Support discharge planning
• Manage personal, unit and hospital resources effectively
• Participate in performance improvement activities
• Follow and document progress in the New Grad Pathway and NCLEX preparation
• Contribute to a positive work environment and team culture
• Perform PCA responsibilities until NCLEX completion and conversion to RN

Additional Requirements

• Ability to read, interpret and analyze data from computer systems and equipment
• Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and assist with heavier tasks as needed
