It's never too early to start exploring your future career. If you're ready to apply the principles you've been learning in the classroom to real-world projects, Evergy is for you. Hands-on experience is what our internship programs are all about. Our programs provide students with meaningful experience while helping Evergy identify talented future full-time employees. Many of our interns transition to successful careers at Evergy.

Evergy interns are trusted contributors on active design projects. In addition to project work, Evergy interns participate in many social and extra-curricular activities, including volunteer events, power plant tours, Lunch-and-Learns, and more.

Intern Description:

This position joins a skilled, energetic, and engaging team of engineers who perform all aspects of high-voltage (69kV-345kV) transmission line design; a fast-paced, dynamic, and highly specialized engineering discipline. Each “T-line” project is unique. The long, linear nature of these facilities requires engineers to solve a variety of challenges, making thoughtful engineering judgment as valuable as technical analysis. Interns are trusted contributors on active engineering projects. They gain exposure to coordinating and collaborating with professionals in other departments and work locations. Interns participate in technical conversations and meetings with project managers and other professionals on the project team. They visit Evergy transmission line projects in the field before, during, and after construction. Construction site visits provide the opportunity to see transmission linemen, some of the most highly skilled and valued workers in the construction industry, at their craft.

Typical intern responsibilities include:

  • Perform detailed line design and analysis using PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE, highly sophisticated finite element software packages used exclusively for transmission line engineering.
  • Create structure loading drawings and review vendor-produced calculations and structure drawings.
  • Design and analyze transmission line foundation systems, including deep drilled piers and embedded structures.
  • Conduct construction site visits to perform safety observations and gain familiarity with the practical application of engineering deliverables.
  • Incorporate and interpret transmission line survey data, including aerial LiDAR, ground survey information, and easement exhibits.
  • Collaborate with the transmission line engineering team and other Evergy teams, including Permitting & Environmental, Substation Engineering, Real Estate, Project Management, and Construction & Maintenance.
  • Prepare construction drawings, bill of material packages, and supporting construction documents.
  • Analyze existing facility structural capacity and electrical clearance margins in accordance with code and company standards.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university with an ABET-accredited engineering program in one of the following or a related technical field: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:

  • A demonstrated ability to overcome challenges and contribute effectively as part of a collaborative project team.
  • An inquisitive, analytical mindset, with a desire to understand the reasoning behind design standards and the perspectives of diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of fundamental engineering principles and advanced mathematics.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets, word processing, and database software.
  • Ability to evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria while exercising sound engineering judgment.

Working Conditions:

Primarily an office setting with standard business hours (Monday-Friday). Periodic visits to transmission line and substation field environments are also expected.
