Traffic Engineer

The MI Mobility Fellows (MMF) Program is a highly selective fellowship designed to strengthen Michigan’s transportation and mobility ecosystem. Fellows from across the country are placed in host organizations where they gain hands-on experience addressing real mobility challenges. This program aims to make Michigan’s mobility future more inclusive, accessible, and sustainable—improving the way people, goods, and ideas move across the state. 

Program Duration: December 1, 2026 – November 12, 2027 
Fellow Compensation: $60k per year + benefits

Position Title: Associate Traffic Engineer 

Position Description (max 300 words) and objectives/goals: The candidate will improve transportation safety and traffic flow with AI-Powered Intelligent Transportation Systems, using MIOVISION and DERQ technologies, to gather real-time safety and traffic info. The Fellow will support City staff with ongoing project milestones, specifically leading the technology deployment phase. This entails scouting for solutions to address identified safety concerns, delivering recommendations, and developing deployment strategies. With the City's support, the Fellow will establish a working group comprising of Wayne County colleagues and other key partners. The Fellow will maintain regular communication with these stakeholders through emails and in-person meetings to collaborate, share insights, and gather feedback as needed. Tasks would include: • Review traffic crash data and analyze safety insights. • Audit high-risk city corridors and intersections. • Organize and lead cross-functional safety meetings. • Assist city staff with ongoing project milestones. • Participate in site visits. 

Project Objective and Goals are as follows: 1. Propose locations to expand Miovision and Derq installations. 2. Provide feedback to vendors to improve ITS and AI programs. 3. Develop language regarding ITS and AI incorporation into the Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. 4. Develop reports summarizing findings. 5. Make recommendations for safety improvement. 6. Develop standardized best practices for safety reviews and implementing AI. 

Skills/Background Preferred (Technical or otherwise - a list is fine): Education: Undergraduate (Upperclassmen Preferred), Graduate students Skills: Transportation engineering background (traffic), data analysis background, construction management knowledge, transportation planning Major: Engineering (Civil/Electrical), Urban Planning, Computer Science Must have a valid driver’s license. 

Primary Working Location (Office address and others covered if applicable): Please note that fellows are required to work onsite, a minimum of 2 days a week.
