Community Wellness & Youth Engagement Intern
Support youth-led work that challenges stigma around mental health and substance use. You’ll work with the Special Projects and Community Wellness Team on Stand Together, combining outreach, communications and program support.
About Allegheny County DHS
Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) connects people in need with services that help. Each year, DHS and its network of 300+ community-based organizations serve more than 200,000 residents across Allegheny County. Interns contribute to real public-sector work while learning alongside professionals working in human services, data, technology, policy, communications and program operations.
What You’ll Do
- Develop flyers and outreach materials for student-led campaigns and events.
- Support school visits, tabling events and public presentations.
- Edit training materials, policy drafts and other program documents.
- Assist with policy writing and documentation related to behavioral health and youth programming.
- Review and enter program data and support staff-development logistics and resources.
What You’ll Gain
- Experience in community engagement, youth programming and behavioral health initiatives.
- Practice creating outreach materials and supporting public-facing events.
- Exposure to policy writing, program operations and evaluation.
What We’re Looking For
- Coursework or experience in psychology, public health, education, social work, nonprofit management or a related field.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently after training.
- Interest in youth empowerment, behavioral health and anti-stigma initiatives.
- Experience with Canva, Adobe or data-entry platforms is a plus.
Additional note: Potential pathway: the source materials note possible part-time Teacher’s Assistant work with Stand Together or application to a full-time Stand Together trainer role.
