Bachelor Level Social Work/Psychology/Human Services/Criminal Justice Internship

Thank you for your interest in an internship at The Child Advocacy Center of Lapeer County. The CAC currently offers internships for Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters for bachelor level interns majoring in Health and Human Service fields. We require at least a 200-hour commitment for all interns. Schedules are flexible and based on the needs of the CAC and interns. Typically interns work 2 days a week between the hours of 9:00am - 6:00 pm. Please note that all internships are unpaid.

The Child Advocacy Center works to give interns a wide range of experiences within their time at the center. This allows interns to develop a wider range of useful skills that they can take with them and use for their benefit regardless of where their path leads them. Interns shadow and work with each position at The Child Advocacy Center to understand how each staff member completes their part which all comes together to form an effective CAC team.

There are different tasks the interns will complete with each person. 

• While shadowing the Family Advocate interns will be able to discuss the child welfare systems, input caregiver/client surveys, prepare the living room for forensic interviews, compile resource packets, shadow family interactions, provide supervision for the children during forensic interviews, assist with follow up calls, and track/input relevant information. 

• The Prevention Coordinator will allow interns to watch personal safety awareness videos, make drafts for social media posts, complete darkness to light trainings, help teach the Personal Safety Awareness Program in Lapeer schools, and assist with the newsletter, events, and fundraising. 

• The Intake Coordinator will have interns observe how to input client information into the database, teach them about the recording equipment, familiarize them with the client folders, and have them prepare the MDT observation room before the forensic interview.  

• While shadowing the MDT Coordinator interns will be able to watch a webinar about Multidisciplinary teams, discuss case review, learn about tracking data, and help create an infographic using statistics. 

• With the Therapists interns will be able to conduct appointment reminder calls, practice diagnosis, learn about TF-CBT, and watch ACE’s webinar. 

• While shadowing the SANE/SART Coordinator interns will be able to watch a webinar about SANE/SART, tour the medical room, review client folders, and review a medical kit. 

• The Forensic Interviewer will have interns read the Michigan Forensic interviewing protocol, prepare the interview room, observe forensic interviews, and debrief with the team following forensic interviews. 

Through shadowing each staff member, The CAC hopes to give interns both a broad and specific overview of how a CAC works. The rotation schedule gives interns a chance to see how all these different positions come together to help children and their families heal from trauma.
