POSITION SUMMARY:

As a Visual Design Intern, you’ll report to the Lead Experience Visual Designer as a member of the Innovation team residing within the Digital Technology & Innovation department. The visual design intern supports the Innovation team with the creation, conception, and execution of visual appealing design assets to communication the team’s story, vision, and outcomes.

 

You are a creative problem solver, curious explorer, and storyteller doing new things with visual design. Your work involves the development of print, digital, environment, motion, and anything in between. You stay up to date with industry trends and incorporate fresh design approaches. You will contribute new innovative ideas and concepts to enhance the overall design strategy. You will work with other designer practitioners, futures thinkers, and technologists to envision and craft experiences that ultimately lead to the transformation of public transportation in the U.S.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Think consumer-first, possessed a bold design perspective, and look for the best approach to tell a story.
  • Love using typography, color, layout, imagery, composition to create visually compelling assets.
  • Collaborate with the team to create visual assets for various projects.
  • Develop new ways of visualizing information to attract attention, convey intricate thoughts, or simplify sophisticated processes.
  • Explore new visual treatments, compositions, and design patterns.
  • Effectively communicate designs and rationale via wireframes, prototypes, guidelines, specifications, presentations, and discussions.
  • Participate in team discussions about current visual design projects.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment – skilled at applying feedback, understanding how to incorporate it, and timely return updated visual assets.
  • Be an Amtrak ambassador, attending and helping to plan studio and community events, workshops, and conferences.
  • Occasional 1-day travel to other Amtrak facilities

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution
  • Actively pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Graphic Design, Digital Media, Communication Design, Product Design, Interaction Design, or a comparable discipline
  • At least 2 years of academic undergraduate studies completed or a junior status at minimum.
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • live within a commutable distance of Amtrak facilities within the Northeast Corridor
  • Actively pursuing a graduate level degree or higher
  • Prior professional design experience.
  • A portfolio showcasing a solid understanding of conceptual thinking, typography, composition, imagery, illustration, and digital design.
  • Proficiency in Figma, Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, as well as the Microsoft suite.
  • Experience with Adobe After Effects for motion graphics, Premier Pro or Final Cut Pro for video editing.
  • Experience with the creative process for photography and photo retouching.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping methods, ranging from paper sketching to digital prototypes.
  • Good organization, communication, storytelling, presentation, and time management skills
  • Ability to absorb sophisticated information and translate it into engaging visual assets.
  • Ability to develop visual assets that could be to print, digital, environment, and anything in-between.
  • Ability to create high quality design work and then manage production of design work with various vendors to ensure the proper outcome.
  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit with a strong attention to detail.

 

COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills

 

The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc.  In addition paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
