HVAC Student Intern

VAI currently has an opening for a HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) Student Intern to join our Facilities Department for a 10-week summer internship opportunity in 2024. The Facilities Department’s mission is to create and maintain a “Best in Class” facility that exceeds staff and guests’ experiences. The department provides a clean, comfortable, functional, and safe working environment for employees to achieve their goals and the goals of the institute. 

 

In supporting this department and this goal, the person in this role will have the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in HVAC systems within a large-scale research-focused environment.  

 

What you will be doing on a regular basis: 

 

Provide maintenance support to the Facilities Department by: 

 

Assist in system maintenance when supporting the maintenance and troubleshooting of HVAC and other building systems to ensure optimal functionality and efficiency. 

Collect and analyze data related to HVAC performance, energy consumption, and system reliability. Provide recommendations for improvements based on findings. 

Work alongside experienced HVAC Technicians and other trades to participate in repairs, installations, and upgrades of HVAC equipment. 

Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance, repairs, and installations. Update documentation as needed. 

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure effective communication and coordination of HVAC-related activities. 

Adhere to safety protocols and regulatory requirements while performing HVAC tasks. Assis in ensuring that the Van Andel Institute’s facilities adhere to industry standards. 

Job shadowing. 

Fulfilling other tasks assigned by supervisor. 

 

What will qualify you for this role? 

 

Preference will be given to students currently enrolled in an accredited HVAC or related technical program. 

Strong interest in HVAC systems, energy efficiency, and sustainability. 

Have experience working in a maintenance or office services environment. 

Basic understanding of HVAC principles and systems. 

Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive) 

 

You should also be a person with the following traits and characteristics: 

 

Strong written communication skills. 

Strong verbal communication skills. 

Proficient in using standard office equipment. 

Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. 

Must be able to work independently with minimal or no direct supervision. 

Highly organized. 

High-level of professionalism and interpersonal skills. 

Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. 

Willing to be trained and to learn new skills. 

 

What we offer: 

VAI defines a Student Intern as a student employee continuing their undergraduate or graduate studies while gaining experience at VAI. This is a paid internship and those student interns who wish to earn academic credit for their internship experience may also participate in the Guest Student Program administered through the Van Andel Institute Graduate School (VAIGS). 

In addition, the HVAC Student Intern will be offered parking in the Michigan Street Development parking structure, contingent upon availability, for a one-time parking pass fee of $15. 

 

The start date of the internship is flexible for either May or June 2024.
