Intern - Communications

Summer Internship opportunities are available to students only. To be eligible for a summer internship, students must be graduating after August 9, 2024, or continuing their education. The Summer Internship begins on May 20, 2024 and ends on August 9, 2024.

Internship rate of pay is $15.00 per hour. This internship position will be for three (3) days a week for 8 hours per day, weekdays only. Remote work is not available for this internship.

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is responsible for Everglades restoration, the largest ecosystem restoration effort in the world. The SFWMD also manages thousands of miles of flood control infrastructure and delivers water to millions of Floridians. Over 1,400 talented staff work every day to protect Florida’s water and natural resources.
 
The SFWMD is looking for a qualified Communications student to join the Office of Communications and Public Engagement as an intern during the Summer of 2024. The successful candidate will be extremely organized, detail-oriented, and innovative.
 
As an SFWMD intern, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of communication projects and initiatives that support our public service mission. This position will assist the Communications staff with daily tasks that promote the agency’s work with Everglades restoration, water supply, flood protection, resiliency and more.
 
Duties and responsibilities include: 
    •Assist with daily tasks and projects.
    •Help implement Communication strategies. 
    •Assist with the creation of public relations materials.
    •Organize digital media assets.
    •Work collaboratively with the Communications team.
    •Assist with special events.
    •Other duties as assigned.

Additional Qualifications: 
    •Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint and Word).
    •Effective verbal and written communication skills.
    •Able to work independently with clear project goals and deadlines. 
    •Excellent organizational skills.
    •Enjoys working in a fast-paced environment.
    •The position demands flexibility and the capacity to deal with fast-changing situations as well as having the interpersonal skills to work with a diverse team. The person in this role must be able to strategically manage their workload.  

Employment Guidelines:
This summer internship opportunity is available to college students who are enrolled in their third year or fourth year of a four-year college program. The ideal candidate will be pursuing a degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, or GIS.

Must be willing to learn new skills, have strong organizational and communication abilities, and be able to follow written and verbal instructions. Must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher and maintain an average grade of B or above in all major fields of study. Transcripts (can be unofficial) are to be submitted with application.

Licensure:
A valid State of Florida Driver’s License is not required. Interns are not authorized to drive District vehicles, operate District boats, ATVs, forklifts or any heavy equipment.

No professional licensure is required for this position.

Physical Requirements/ Working Environment:
Partly sedentary in an office environment sitting at a desk and operating a personal computer to produce work products.
