Required attendance to Bexar County Commissioner’s Court (Date TBD) and the Intern Recognition Luncheon, August 1st, hosted by Generation NEXT.

Artpace San Antonio is a nonprofit residency program which supports Texas, national, and international artists in the creation of new art. As a catalyst for artistic expression, we engage local communities with global art practices and experiences.

The Bexar County Arts intern will work directly with the Director of Development and other staff, providing essential assistance with two Artpace programs/events in 2024. First, the Bexar County Arts intern will help plan and assist in executing the opening engagement events for Artpace’s Summer/Fall Hudson Showroom Exhibition featuring the influences and work of San Antonio-born, Houston-based artist Vincent Valdez. Beloved throughout Texas and beyond, Valdez presented his compelling exhibition, Strangest Fruit, in Artpace’s Hudson Showroom in 2014 and has chosen Artpace as the San Antonio venue for his latest installation, Siete Dias/Seven Days, curated by the Houston Art League. The Bexar County Arts intern will assist and witness first-hand the preparations and processes involved in presenting a major art exhibition. They will work directly with the Director of Development to plan multi-event opening engagement opportunities for audiences of all ages to maximize the community impact, access, and enjoyment of this important work. The public exhibition opening is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, July 18, with press and members’ previews the day before and engagement opportunities in the opening days and weeks of the exhibition.

The Bexar County Arts intern will also take the lead in developing Artpace’s Big Give 2024 campaign, providing critical creative input, learning campaign strategies, and management tools necessary for this favorite annual September grassroots funding opportunity. The selected intern will work closely with the Development staff to learn the potential benefits and mechanics of this popular peer-to-peer fundraising platform. These basic skills are easily transferable to other grassroots, crowdfunding, social media-based philanthropy, and cause-based activism. While Big Give 2024 is September 18-19, the campaign is created well in advance and goes ‘live’ on the designated days.

This year, the Bexar County Internship schedule coincides with event preparation for a major art exhibition opening and a grassroots fundraising campaign, providing the selected intern with meaningful on-the-job training and experience working with a non-profit organization. They will learn the mechanics of art exhibition and event planning, learn the invaluable and enjoyable process of creating a social media-based fundraising campaign, and gain a deeper understanding of how the arts benefit their community with real-world applications of business skills that can be applied to their careers.
