Summer Undergraduate Opportunity - Extremity Trauma and Infection

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is offering an undergraduate opportunity for Summer 2024.

What will I be doing?

As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers on the Combat Wound Care Research Team in an effort to identify and characterize new potential antimicrobial agents meant to reduce combat related wound infection.

  •  Learning about common bacterial pathogens and the in vitro techniques used in microbiology
  • Visit with experts in combat care, microbiology, and analytical and molecular chemistry
  • Learning to read and understand the scientific literature
  • Collecting and analyzing a variety of data to include proper recording and documentation
  • Learning to perform scientific assays (Kirby-Bauer Inhibition Assay, Minimal Inhibitory Concentration Assay, etc)
  • Reporting findings to the team and participation in assessment of progress
  • Preparing reports and figures for manuscript

Where will I be located? San Antonio, Texas

What is the anticipated start date?

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length?

This appointment is a ten-week research appointment for Summer 2024, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About USAISR

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command of the U.S. Army Medicine Command. The Institute is the Army's lead research laboratory for improving the care of combat casualties. The mission of the Institute is to "Optimize Combat Casualty Care". About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in one of the areas of discipline listed in the eligibility section of the opportunity.

Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:

• Demonstrates competence in oral and written communication in the English language 
• Organized, attentive to detail, and possess a positive, friendly and professional demeanor
• Flexible with changing priorities and able to communicate in a diplomatic and professional manner
• Computer skills including intermediate level experience with Excel and other Microsoft Office Software
• Experience in performing basic laboratory skills and maintaining a safe laboratory environment
• Familiarity with medical terminology and abbreviations
• Effective time management and task prioritization skills
