Child Support Technician Internship

The dedicated staff at Denver Human Services (DHS) are here to listen and advise, helping people apply for public assistance programs. We can provide information about food, financial assistance, and help for veterans and those who need long-term care. DHS provides various other services, including help with transitional housing, medical assistance, and heating costs.

 

What You’ll Do

The Child Support Team intends to hire 2 interns to start in Fall 2024 and intern throughout 2024 with the possibility to extend into Spring 2025. As an Intern, you will support the efforts of the Child Support Services Team.  The Child Support Services Team provides quality and timely Child Support Services by partnering with parents and the community to ensure that all children receive financial and medical support. As an Intern, you will learn about the Human Services, Social Work, Family Law System, and the processes that are in place to establish and enforce child support orders.

As an Intern, you will get to experience:

  • Shadow Child Support Technicians and provide support with their caseloads with documentation and research.
  • Assist in the preparation of court hearings.
  • Starting, updating, maintaining, and filing documentation.
  • Motivational interviewing and supportive services assessment.
  • Support and conduct client interviews.
  • Interview parents in the community involved with establishing and enforcing parentage and child support.
  • Opportunity to manage a small caseload independently.

 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: In this internship, the Intern will not interact with Clients in a manner like a Social Worker, Behavioral Therapist, Counselor, or Psychologist, and as such, this internship may not qualify or meet the requirements for certain academic programs. However, this internship may provide limited supervision under a licensed Social Worker.  Please let us know in your application if you will need the supervision of a licensed Social Worker per the requirements of your academic program.

 

About You

Our ideal candidate will have some or all of the following experience and skills:

  • Pursuing a certificate, licensure, or degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Human Services, Criminology, or a closely related field.
  • Ability to intern from fall 2024 to the end of 2024; there is a possibility for this internship to be extended.
  • Ability to work 15-20 hours a week, Monday through Friday, anytime between 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
  • Ability to work onsite for at least 2 days per week, more during initial training.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Great written and verbal communication.
  • Handle and resolve conflict and challenging situations with empathy.
  • Practice cultural competence while in a service role
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced and constantly changing environment.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education Requirement:  Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s, or higher degree in, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion). 

Experience: None 

Education and Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted. 

License/Certification Requirement:  none

Location Flexibility

The City and County of Denver utilizes a hybrid model workplace that balances the responsibilities of public service with the benefits of a flexible work environment. Employees work where needed, at a city site and/or in the field several days a week and telecommute remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days.
