Commercialization Student Assistant

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an opening for a Commercialization Student Assistant, Chemical Science to join the Intellectual Property Office to support technology transfer activities. In this role, you will work closely with business development, marketing, and licensing experts to learn and experience the process of commercializing energy storage and generation technologies developed at Berkeley Lab. 

What You Will Do:

• Business Development:
  • Shadow business development experts and contribute to technology assessments to determine the potential of identified technologies for patentability and marketability for commercial uses.
  • Assist with customer discovery interviews/surveys for energy storage technologies.
  • Learn intellectual property protection strategy and processes.
• Marketing:
  • Provide marketing research and strategy development support.
  • Write marketing pieces, feature stories, and media pieces.
  • Conduct email marketing campaigns, including developing contact lists and creating Mailchimp email campaigns.
  • Develop videos/graphics or other content for marketing and branding activities; help organize, execute, and distribute creative campaigns.
  • Help organize and market webinars.
• Intellectual Property Data Processing and Reporting:
  • Learn intellectual property management and patent analysis databases, input/upkeep the inquiry or company engagement data, and produce reports as needed for case analysis.

What is Required:

• Current student at an accredited university, senior undergraduate or graduate-level. 
• Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Energy Engineering, or Electrical Engineering program.
• Energy generation experience or coursework with electrochemical systems. 
• Strong writing and communication skills.

• This is a part-time student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. Ideally the selected candidate is able to commit to at least 1 year in the position.
• Salary: The hiring hourly ranges for this position are listed below. Salary for this position is based on a step schedule and the final candidate’s qualifications, relevant education, year within the program, and union contract agreement.
  • Undergrad Student Year 4 (Senior) = $22.02 hourly
  • Graduate Student = $29.37 to $42.65 hourly
• Hours: This position can operate up to 40 hours per week during the summer months and up to 20 hours per week during the academic school year (September-May). Hours/Days of the week are flexible, however hours worked must be within standard business hours (M-F 8am to 5pm Pacific Time Zone).
• This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

• Work may be performed on-site, hybrid, or full-time telework. The primary onsite/hybrid location for this role is Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work must be performed within the United States.
