Operations Intern

This position in Microchip Technology Corp Systems Operations group is intended for college students embarking on a graduate/undergraduate program wishing to explore the multiple disciplines of manufacturing operations to determine a potential career path, manufacturing, supply chain, planning, quality, logistics, engineering, and many others.  Use this opportunity to learn on the job how a world class operations team works and exceeds our customers expectations.  Learn what it takes to be part of a world class team – come join us.

These positions are a paid internship. The hourly rate will be negotiated based on work experience and education level. The internship will require minimum 40 hours per week during “summer” months and target 10 hours (optional) per week during school year if applicable based on proximity.  Participants in the Microchip intern program will receive preference when applying for full time employment upon graduation into an NCG role.

  • Qualifications/Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Active student status – currently enrolled and taking classes.
  • Pursuing a masters, bachelors, associate, or apprenticeship as part of a vocational program.
  • Preferred disciplines; engineering, supply chain, finance, accounting, software, math, physics, chemistry.
  • Interested in learning about an operation discipline.
  • Smart, honest, hard-working, responsible, eager to learn, enthusiastic, a team player.

Potential paths based on skills, training, and interests – 

  • Manufacturing is the creation or production of goods with the help of equipment, labor, machines, & tools.  Manufacturing execution occurs when people or equipment follow a designed sequence of events transforming materials and supplies into parts or products. 
  • Manufacturing engineering is the field of engineering that designs and optimizes the manufacturing process, or the steps through which raw materials are transformed into a final product. 
  • Production planning is the planning of production and manufacturing modules in a company or industry. It utilizes the resource allocation of activities of employees, materials, and production capacity.  Different types of production methods, such as single item manufacturing, batch production, mass production, continuous production etc. have their own type of production planning. Production planning can be combined with production control into production planning and control, or it can be combined with enterprise resource planning.
  • Supply-chain is a complex system that consists of facilities that convert raw materials into finished products and distribute them to end consumers or end customers.  Meanwhile, supply chain management deals with the flow of goods within the supply chain in the most efficient manner – includes supplier management & procurement.
  • Logistics is the part of supply chain management that deals with the efficient forward and reverse flow of goods, services, and related information from the point of origin to the point of consumption according to the needs of customers.  This entails freight, traffic, packaging, warehousing, receiving, shipping, import/export, & inventory management
  • Finance & Accounting – a systematic set of procedures for recording and reporting measurements of the cost of manufacturing goods and performing services in the aggregate and in detail. It includes methods for recognizing, allocating, aggregating and reporting such costs and comparing them with standard costs.
  • Quality assurance in both manufacturing and service industries describes the systematic efforts taken to assure that the product(s) delivered to customer(s) meet with the contractual and other agreed upon performance, design, reliability, and maintainability expectations of that customer.

During your eight-plus week internship, you will learn multiple operational disciplines and work on projects to help the organization be successful.

  • Standards analysis - exceptions
  • Preparation for cost roll.
  • Route maintenance – part revision alignment
  • WIP tracking reports - visualizations.
  • Capacity model development / validation with time studies
  • Factory certification program
  • Factory visualization
  • Workmanship standards
  • Manufacturing visual aides
  • Internal project management

Essential Qualifications

  • Strong Interpersonal Skills
  • Proven planning, organizational and communication skills 
  • Proficient in the use Microsoft Office software (specifically Excel)
  • Demonstrated analytical, verbal, and written communication skills 
  • Ability to reliably get to work on time 
  • Present yourself in a professional manner
  • US citizen or permanent resident
