School of Health Sciences Professional and Career Ambassador

The School of Health Sciences Professional and Career Ambassador helps students with both career-related and professional/graduate school tasks via drop-in hours and individual appointments. The Professional and Career Ambassador will maintain a flexible work schedule to be able to provide career-related guidance and workshops to students, the ECLIPSE leadership program and student organizations within the School of Health Sciences.

 

This position is only open to students currently pursuing a degree within the School of Health Sciences.

 

You must able to attend a mandatory paid training the week of August 26 – August 30, 2024.

 

Primary duties: 

  • Meet with students to offer guidance on resumes, updating Handshake and LinkedIn profiles, and interviewing for internship/job opportunities
  • Meet with School of Health Sciences pre-professional students to provide resources and assistance with personal statements, job shadowing, gaining healthcare experience and preparing for professional/graduate school interviews
  • Provide freshman and sophomore level students with guidance and tools to help them explore potential career options related to their interests
  • Facilitate career related presentations in classrooms, for members of ECLIPSE and SHS student organizations on topics such as resume tips, personal statements, e-Portfolios, interview preparation, etc.
  • Prepare students for upcoming career fairs, networking events and School of Health Sciences niche events
  • Coach students on pursuit of internship/job and graduate school opportunities
  • Collaborate with peer Career Ambassadors to brainstorm strategies for increasing engagement and promoting services
  • Engage with SHS Advising, ECLIPSE and the Dean’s Office regularly to maintain support and receive feedback

Qualifications: 

  • Must be available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week during Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 semesters
  • Must be a current student pursuing a degree within the School of Health Sciences
  • Possess flexibility and adaptability to manage availability in both the School of Health Sciences in the Human Health Building as well as the Career and Life Design Center in North Foundation Hall on a weekly basis
  • Must be comfortable working with students in a group and individual capacity
  • Must have strong presentation, verbal and written communication skills 
  • Must be able to work effectively as a member of a team and autonomously 
  • Must be detail-oriented, motivating, and demonstrate strong customer service skills
  • Possess a strong desire to positively represent Oakland University 
  • Must be interested in and excited about helping students through career guidance utilizing resources, creativity, and advice
