Media and Public Relations Intern - FA24

OVERVIEW:

Media and Public Relations interns support and implement public relations plans and projects for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience to help build an audience base and increase attendance and brand awareness. Primary projects include but are not limited to the creation and execution of a strategic public relations plan to promote the opening of an exhibit or an event.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Writing
• Research and help to create talking points for new exhibits
• Press alerts
• Press releases
• Ready-to-run stories for our website
• Ready-to-run stories for community newsletters and Indy’s Child magazine
• Clip, record, and file newspaper and magazine articles as they pertain to The Children’s Museum
• Monitor broadcast media and websites for information about or important to The Children’s Museum
• Research and organize files which include media clippings and other museum-related materials
• Keep local/regional media contact lists updated
• Assist the Public Relations Manager with media tours and visits
• Brainstorming potential PR or media campaigns

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Jr. or Sr. standing, enrolled in a Bachelor’s Degree program at an accredited college/university. Candidates studying Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, or a similar degree program are preferred.
  2. Strong presentation and customer service skills. Experience working with children and youth in formal and informal environments.
  3. Previous Journalism or Writing experience is required.
  4. Must work a flexible weekday, weekend, evening, and some holidays schedule, including 1-2 evenings per month covering special events. The Museum is open 6-7 days per week.
  5. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment that values diversity and is child-centric.
  6. Interact with visitors and co-workers in a supportive, positive, and friendly manner.
  7. Maintain behavior patterns acceptable to co-workers and the general museum culture.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Required to review log sheets, and keep track of visitors and materials in gallery.
  2. Must be able to view activities and exhibit components, observe gallery space, and frequently use computers.
  3. Must be able to engage in heavy verbal, electronic, and public presentation communication as well as present ideas and information to large audiences.
  4. Required to manipulate activities, clean and maintain exhibit spaces, and use dexterity. Must be able to traverse and navigate the museum building and campus adeptly several times daily.
