Youth Mental Health Corps Fellow

Overview

Are you looking to make a meaningful impact, gain hands-on experience in youth development, and earn career-advancing credentials? 4-H HealthCorps seeks a dedicated individual to serve as a 4-H Youth Club Coordinator and Youth Mental Health Corps (YMHC) Fellow with Michigan State University Extension. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside Michigan State University Extension in promoting mental, emotional, and physical well-being among youth and families while earning credentials in the field! 

This is a full-time position, 36-40 hours per week, starting on October 1, 2024, and ending on September 12, 2025. To be eligible for a Youth Mental Health Corps Fellow, candidates must be 18-24 years old and interested in pursuing a mental health/social work career.  This position is ideal for alumni, part-time students, adult learners, and those available for ~40 hours a week, primarily during business hours.

About the Program

4-H HealthCorps is a Michigan's AmeriCorps Program run out of Michigan State University Extension, placing AmeriCorps members in Extension county offices across Michigan. AmeriCorps is a federal agency for national service and volunteerism, providing opportunities for Americans of all backgrounds to serve their country, address pressing challenges, and improve lives and communities. The Youth Mental Health Corps (YMHC) was created through a public-private collaboration with a robust set of partners to address the growing needs of young people and create career pathways for mental health professionals. YMHC Fellows are a select sub-set of AmeriCorps members engaged in Youth Mental Health Corps activities, gaining valuable on-the-job experience and earning credentials to advance their careers.

Roles and Responsibilities

As the 4-H Youth Club Coordinator and YMHC Fellow, you will play a vital role in delivering special interest workshops to area schools and community partners while serving as a mental and behavioral health liaison. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and organizing 4-H special interest workshops with volunteers, focusing on mental, emotional, and physical health topics.
  • Recruiting and engaging youth new to 4-H in special interest programming.
  • Recruiting and supporting volunteers for guest programming and general support.
  • Planning and hosting family engagement events related to well-being.
  • Collecting data and submitting reports to site supervisor, the AmeriCorps program, and/or other funders as needed.
  • Actively engaging in Youth Mental Health Corps training, professional development, and certification processes.
  • Serving as a mental and behavioral health liaison and resource navigator for service recipients.
  • Participating in career pathway supports provided to Youth Mental Health Corps Fellows, such as career cohort convenings and office hour opportunities.
  • Traveling to attend the National Youth Mental Health Corps convening in the spring of 2025.
  • Completing pre- and post-Youth Mental Health Corps Fellow career surveys.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Must be 18 - 24 upon starting, with an interest in pursuing a career in the mental health field
  • Strong interest or experience working with youth of all ages (5-18).
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident.
  • Must pass the following background checks: National Sex Offender Public Website, HireRight, FBI Fingerprinting, and any additional checks based upon State of Residence.
  • Experience working with diverse populations (multiple ages, ethnicities, religions, etc.).
  • Must commit to serving 36-40 hours per week for the entire term: October 1, 2024 - September 12, 2025.

 

Work Environment:

Service will include virtual elements but primarily be in-person at one of the twelve county offices where members will be placed. It's best to apply if you reside in or can easily commute to one of the following locations:

  • Oakland County (office in Pontiac)
  • Presque Isle County (office in Rogers City)
  • Schoolcraft County (office in Manistique)
  • Wexford County (office in Cadillac)

Members will receive office space and necessary equipment. Expect occasional evening and weekend events.

 

Compensation and Benefits: 

  • $18,700 living stipend (pre-tax), distributed evenly, bi-weekly.
