Sign Language Interpreter

Job Title:  Interpreter, West Caroll High School 

Job Type: Full time, 177 days at 7 hours per day. 
Start Date:August 5th, 2024

This position is a full-time position created and governed by the NIA Policies and Rules and
Regulations assigned to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Department and under the direct
supervision of the Education Department Operations Executive and/or Supervisor. The
Educational Interpreter assists in facilitating communication between students who are deaf orhard-of-hearing and others using sign language and/or oral interpreting. The  Educational Interpreter is a member of an educational team that has a federal obligation to educate a student with special needs. As a related service provider, the Educational Interpreter has legal responsibilities to support a child's education, providing the student access to the general curriculum. These legal responsibilities define a very different scope of practice for the Educational Interpreter than for the adult community interpreter.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each role and
responsibility satisfactorily. Although often used interchangeably, a role refers to a specific
function of the educational interpreter while a responsibility refers to a specific task implemented within a role. Each role and responsibility can be direct or indirect. Direct support will be appropriately assigned to facilitate student learning and access to communication.

Educational Interpreter
Communication
1. Use recognized interpreting and/or transliterating skills to facilitate communication
between deaf and hard-of-hearing students and others including faculty, staff,
administrators, other students or visitors.
2. Interpret spoken material presented to students who are deaf and hard of hearing at the
level of the student's understanding both in general education and special education
settings.
3. Interpret for students at meetings, conferences, field trips, assemblies and other
educational activities.
4. Communicate observations from general education classes to the DHH team.


Other Support for Students
1. When not performing interpreting duties, the interpreter will support language attempts,
encourage appropriate interaction, pre-teach vocabulary and provide tutoring as directed
by the classroom teacher.
2. Provide collaborative student supervision as needed across educational environments
(e.g. hallway accompaniment, lunch/recess, bus loading and unloading)
3. Prepare for demanding course material as necessary for successful interpreting and/or
transliterating.


Participate in School Community
1. Utilize planning time to meet with teachers and staff as deemed appropriate by the
educational team and/or supervisors.
2. Observe and follow all NIA and district policies and procedures
3. Participate in professional development as required by the Illinois State Board of
Education and as relevant to current professional trends.
4. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about
students.
5. Maintain a high level of positive collaboration in all professional service situations.
6. Support the general safety, productiveness and operations of the school, including
preparedness for emergencies in any educational setting.


KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
1. Knowledge of modern office equipment, including computers and specialized software
applications programs.
2. Superior written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills.
3. Advanced organizational skills regarding time management.
4. Ability to develop and implement goals, objectives, procedures, and work standards

5. Ability to work independently needing minimal supervision.
6. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
7. Ability to work collaboratively with the educational team.
8. Ability to work a 35-hour work week.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Education
1. Must meet IL State Board of Education requirements for Educational Sign Language
Interpreter Approval.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly
required to use hands to manipulate or feel objects, tools, or controls, talk and hear well enough to translate speech into sign language for most of the working day. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms and may also be required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to physical hazards (e.g. kicking, biting, scratching students) and airborne and bloodborne pathogen exposure. Will be exposed to indoor and outdoor climate and weather conditions. The employee will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active.
