Prints & Drawings Paid-Internship
Prints & Drawings Paid-Internship (Temporary, Part-Time).
BACKGROUND
The focus of this internship responds to the request of the administration at the Millard Sheets Art Center (MSAC) for a selection of wall label texts for works that will be presented in the 2025 LACMA Art Bridges Local Access exhibition, “Before You Now: Capturing the Self in Portraiture.” This version of the exhibition will include new works not seen at the other venues and will be on view at the Pomona Fairgrounds Fairplex in Spring of 2025. Because the existing bilingual booklet will not be available at the Fairplex presentation due to high attendance, the intern will be instrumental in researching and writing new object texts that will augment the booklet texts, which the curators will be reducing for in-gallery use. The intern will work in concert with both curators, and will be given a guidesheet to understand writing for a general audience and the value of creating a robust visitor experience, as well as learn about LACMA standards along with the Chicago Manual Style. The intern will be invited back in Spring 2025 to see the results of their project on site at the Fairplex venue, as well as a chance to see the exhibit with the curators at the current venue at Cal-State Northridge soon after their internship begins this summer.
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
The intern will conduct scholarly research and write descriptive label texts for approximately eight (but could be as many as twelve) additional artists and their respective works to be featured at the MSAC; The works included in the group do not yet have existing text written by the curators, as featured in the exhibition’s accompanying booklet.
The artist candidates for the proposal include: Diane Arbus or Cindy Sherman / Ed Bereal / Melanie Cervantes or Yaneli Delgado / Yrena Cervantez / Ed Moses or Claes Oldenburg / Man Ray / Patssi Valdez / Andy Warhol or William Wegman
The intern will gain knowledge and experience in the following areas:
- Learn how to begin their research on these featured artists and compose short descriptive texts to accompany the object labels that will be placed next to the works in the Fairplex installation.
- Attention has been made to provide a diverse group of artists as candidates for the project, composed of twelve possible selections, allowing the intern to select the artists of their preference.
