Pre-College Programs Tutors and Mentors

Job description:      Pre-College Programs (PCP) department  is looking for Oakland University  undergraduate students who are passionate about working with diverse high school students as both a  tutor and mentor.  Primary responsibilities will be held in person.  As a PCP tutor, you  are responsible for providing guidance to precollege students by tutoring in local high schools.  As a PCP mentor, you will facilitate  group events and  campus tours.

Language Skills:

  • We are looking for tutors who can speak both English and Spanish, though it is also acceptable for tutors to speak only English.
  • While not mandatory for all positions, proficiency in Spanish is preferred.

Duties include: 

  • Work College Visit  by giving campus tours for schools (in-person - facilitating ice breakers,  participating in student panels,  and providing guidance  during group sessions). 
  • Provide tutoring  at Pontiac High School
  • Assist with  Wade H. McCree Incentive Scholarship Programs during  orientations,  the SAT Prep Program
  • During summer months (May to August),  PCP tutors and mentors will assist with  day camps (camps scheduled during a typical work day),  and residential camps (overnight camps).  

Requirements 

  • Must have a minimum of a 2.75 GPA for Tutoring
  • Must attend OU for one full semester prior to employment 
  • Must demonstrate excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Must model behaviors that result in establishing and maintaining a positive, respectful tutor/ mentor relationship with participants
  • Must have the ability to work up to 25 hours a week (we will work around your schedule)
  • Must attend all mandatory tutor / mentor meetings trainings
  • Must volunteer for 2 of the 4 annual events hosted by Pre-College Programs
