Study Abroad Advisor

This Position is 15-20 hours per week.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Oakland University degree-seeking student in good academic standing.
  • Prior experience studying, living, or working abroad strongly preferred, especially on an Oakland University study abroad program.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language preferred.
  • Familiarity with standard office software and computer applications.
  • Student available to work afternoons. Study abroad walk-in hours are from 1pm-3pm.






Responsibilities

  • Study abroad advising:
  • Inform and advise students on a group and individual basis about study abroad and study away program opportunities available to them, including OU partner institutions and consortia, OU faculty-led programs, international exchange programs and National Student Exchange, international internships, and academic service learning; support student understanding of how to make an educated study abroad decision; tailor study abroad information to students’ individual interests, goals and needs; communicate this information to students in person, over the phone and via e-mail.
  • Promote study abroad via class presentations, information sessions, New Student Orientation presentations, Transfer Day presentations, study abroad fair and other presentations as planned throughout the year.
  • Provide comprehensive support to students and parents throughout the study abroad process from application to re-entry. Ensure an understanding of and compliance with all policies and procedures (academic credit approval, risk management, financial aid).
  • Monitor student applications to study abroad via AbroadOffice and ensure that students have completed required documents and procedures for other offices, including the Office of Student Financial Services, the Office of Student Housing, and the Office of the Registrar.
  • Advise and assist students on general student visa issues, as needed.
  • In collaboration with the International Education team, provide assistance and coordination in the following areas:
  • Diversity and inclusion: Collaborate with the Center for Multicultural Initiatives to provide study abroad support, advising, and programming for traditionally underrepresented students.
  • Marketing and promotion: Strategically determine means and methods of marketing study abroad programs to recruit eligible students.
  • Curriculum integration: Align study abroad options with Oakland University curriculum by meeting with academic departments and faculty and identifying course equivalencies.
  • Study abroad support: Support relevant study abroad initiatives as needed.
