JOB DESCRIPTION

 The HSE Intern will assist in supporting the Company’s Courage To Care program and environmental management system.  Assists in the integration of environmental / safety compliance and management systems into manufacturing operations. May participate in tracking metrics and training development. Coordinates with other facility / regional / corporate environmental / safety resources. Provides a good foundation and solid understanding of major environmental and safety regulations to the Site Team.  May participate in environmental / safety agency inspections.

 

Potential locations for this internship include sites in Elkhart, Albion, Bristol, and Fremont, IN.


As an HSE Intern, you will be working on robust, hands-on projects.  Potential projects may include, but not limited to:

 Safety

  • Assist Site in complying with government (OSHA and similar agencies) safety regulatory compliance requirements, e.g. machinery guards, interlock systems, etc.
  • Responsible for staying up to date with safety regulations and informing management of changes
  • Helps ensure Site is conducting safety training for all employees, including new hires
  • Assists Site with developing Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs) and revisions
  • Assists in Site safety audits
  • Helps ensure Site is keeping accident records and completed reports required by law and company policy, including first aid and near miss reports, accident investigation, etc.
  • Assists in conducting accident investigations
  • Responsible for assisting in Courage to Care program
  • Assists Site in development of procedures to comply with all government safety and corporate safety programs, eg, energy control, confined space, emergency evacuation and fire drill, hearing conservation, personal protective equipment, powered industrial trucks, contractor safety, and other programs
  • Assists in monthly accident analysis for the Site
  • Attends and participates, when possible, in corporate, insurance, government, Fire Marshall, etc. safety inspections
  • Participates in ergonomic assessments of workstations and tasks to identify and address potential risks. Assists in implementing ergonomic solutions to improve worker comfort, reduce strain, and prevent musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Other duties as assigned

Environmental

  • Assists with environmental permits (air, water, wastewater, and hazardous waste) includes: renewals, required reporting, permit modifications, and required notifications
  • Conducts environmental audits at assigned Site
  • Assist Site in competing reports required by permits and coordinating monthly HSE compliance forms to facility and corporate management
  • Assists Site with the research for new applicable information via internet searches
  • Assists Site with maintaining all required environmental policies, procedures, and plans
  • Assists Site with any customer requests regarding chemical use and product content
  • Assists Site with hazardous industrial waste disposal
  • Assists Site with participation in the environmental stewardship initiative programs
  • Responsible for staying up to date with regulatory changes and technology

 

QUALIFICATIONS

To be successful in this role, you must possess the following:

·        Strong computer skills – Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Powerpoint), risk assessment modeling, and regulatory agency on-line reporting

·        Strong communication skills, written and oral

·        Strong Excel and data analysis skills

·        Strong influencing skills with the courage to confidently express an independent point of view

·        Administrative experience with great attention to detail

·        Excellent sense of ethics and accountability

·        Clear, professional written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

·        Strong organizational, time management and problem-solving skills

 

EDUCATION

In addition, you must be actively enrolled an accredited university working towards a bachelors or masters degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Industrial Engineering or related area of study.
