SBA ACHIEVE Peer Tutor

Welcome to ACHIEVE!

ACHIEVE is a student development program  in the School of Business Administration.  We equip all students with knowledge, skills, and competencies for personal and professional success, while inspiring and coaching students to thrive and make an impact in their chosen field.  

The ACHIEVE Peer Tutor provides 1:1 Resume Review appointments with students enrolled in SBC 2990 and 3990.  Resume Review appointments are offered both in person and virtually and typically last 30-45 minutes.  The ACHIEVE Peer Tutor teaches students how to use available resources (including the ACHIEVE resume rubric, sample resumes, transferable skills and action statements) in order to write a resume that meets ACHIEVE criteria.  The Peer Tutor will also refer students to Career and Life Design for further support beyond the basic ACHIEVE resume requirements.

During times when no Resume Review appointments are scheduled, the ACHIEVE Peer Tutor may provide other support to the ACHIEVE team, such as front office support, clerical support, or support with special projects.  These assignments will depend on the needs of the ACHIEVE team and the interests of the hired Peer Tutor.

This position will be 15-20 hours per week during Fall 2024 - Winter 2025

Duties:

  • Review student resumes.  Give feedback and provide resources for students to make improvements before resumes are submitted to the instructor for grading.
  • Be familiar with available resume resources (rubrics, sample resumes, transferable skills, Action Statements) and Career and Life Design resources - refer students to resources as appropriate.
  • Keep an updated calendar in Handshake for ACHIEVE students to schedule Resume Review appointments.  Support record keeping and tracking of student attendance and feedback.
  • Communicate with ACHIEVE staff when no Resume Review appointments are scheduled and participate in other support needs or special projects.

Other Qualifications:

Preference for candidates who are available two consecutive semesters

  • Preference for candidates who have successfully completed SBC 2990
  • Applicants must be admitted and enrolled at Oakland University
  • Available to work between 15-20 hours per week
  • Comfortable working with students majoring  in business fields
  • Comfortable giving clear, constructive feedback
  • Comfortable using equity and inclusion strategies when working with diverse students
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong ability to read a rubric and identify whether written resume meets the listed criteria
  • Knowledge of Oakland University Career and Life Design and resume writing resources 
  • Other skills to support special projects, such as graphic design, marketing, video production, or event planning are highly desirable.
