AI-based Electric Demand Forecasting Internship
ISO New Englandis the not-for-profit, independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England’s ongoing transition to clean energy.
Internship Title – AI-based Electric Demand Forecasting
Department- Planning Services (Forecasting)
Minimum Education level: MS
Preferred Majors: Data science, engineering, computer science, economics, statistics, applied mathematics, or meteorology
Department Description:
The New England region's deep commitment to decarbonizing its economy within the next few decades has made ISO-NE's work in forecasting electricity demand an exciting, challenging, and innovative career path. The forecast group in System Planning is responsible for predictive modeling and data analytics that span both short-term (up to one week ahead) and long-term (10 years or more) time horizons.
What will you be working on:
Intern will collaborate with forecasting staff in developing software and automated processes in support of various load forecast activities. Responsibilities will include:
Develop data pipelines;
Conduct descriptive and/or predictive statistical analysis;
Development of new code, and perform review and refactoring of existing code.
Perform research to gain domain knowledge required for project(s).
This position will support the candidate's pursuit of a meaningful, dynamic career within the energy sector. The forecast group in System Planning uses data science to gain insights at the intersection of climate, public policy, and the electric power system. The candidate will get a first-hand opportunity to work in a friendly and fast-paced team setting, learning and developing tools to help the ISO plan and operate the evolving grid.
How will you make an impact:
Emerging trends in electrification, the proliferation of distributed energy resources, and retail-based demand programs represent unprecedented changes to the region's end use consumption of electricity. The candidate selected for this internship will help their team develop novel solutions to address key forecast challenges, and help the ISO facilitate the region's energy transition.
What we look for in a candidate:
Enjoys coding and building automated processes, familiarity with Python, R, or Matlab is required;
Experience performing statistical analysis of large data sets;
Excellent analytical and creative problem solving skills;
Familiarity in applying AI or statistical modeling for time series forecasting, particularly in energy sector applications;
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
To be eligible for the internship candidate must have completed at least the first year of college and be currently enrolled in a four year or graduate-level academic program. Candidates must have the authority to work in the US on a permanent basis, without requiring sponsorship.
