2025 Product Risk Engineering Summer Intern - Grand Rapids, MI

We are hiring a 2025 Product Risk Engineering Summer Intern to lead and collaborate with other engineers on projects to understand and reduce product safety risk, improve product reliability and performance, and quality improvements on components or products produced by suppliers. You’ll have an impact on the overall customer experience with our product while being a part of the Operations Excellence organization. 

What You Will Be Doing: 

You’ll be working on high priority product risk projects tied to product safety, quality, and reliability with the goal to: 

  • Improve product quality performance and life of use without failures 
  • Enhance the customer experience in the use of our products 
  • Continuously improve our internal processes that we use to achieve these goals 
  • In partnership with other engineers, you'll apply: 
    • Engineering approaches, methods, and tools 
    • Problem-solving techniques 
    • Project management disciplines 
    • Communication and teamwork skills in a collaborative work environment 

Your Future Team: 

The Product Risk Team is a part of the Operations Excellence group. Our team’s goal is to improve the customer’s experience by ensuring the highest product safety, overall quality, and reliability (ability to meet the customer’s expectation for product performance for many years without degradation or failure). We use engineering principles along with robust technical problem-solving and optimization methods and tools to accomplish this. We also work to continuously improve the way that we work by bringing in new methods and tools and optimizing our work processes. 

You’ll be mentored and led by engineering technical professionals in a cross functional, collaborative environment. We believe you’ll enjoy this cross functional opportunity on these valuable projects. We enjoy working together as a team, and we partner with many other individuals and teams within Steelcase to get our work done.

Required Skills and Competencies 

  • Pursuing a major in engineering towards a Bachelor’s degree 

Preferred Skills and Competencies 

  • Pursuing a mechanical engineering degree 
  • A strong commitment to a career in technical engineering 
  • Experience using engineering technical tools and concepts (e.g., engineering disciplines, Excel, Minitab, JMP, etc.) 
  • Strong analytical and technical skills and experience 
  • Demonstrated creative problem solving and proactive learning 
  • Strong technical documentation and organizational skills 
  • Robust proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) 
  • Experience working in a team-based environment 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Prior intern, co-op, or research experience in engineering 
  • Leadership experience inside and/or outside the classroom 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to articulate clearly
