Intern, Firmware Engineering (Summer 2025)

About the Role:
 Join our dynamic team as a Firmware Engineering Intern at Chamberlain Group! This internship is your ticket to gaining hand-on experience in developing cutting-edge embedded software for New Product Development and IOT devices. Internships at Chamberlain Group are designed to give college students opportunities to complement their formal education with career-related experience. Interns will have an abundance of hands-on development opportunities and interactions in a real-world business environment. As a member of the Firmware Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to learn from a variety of individuals including VP’s, Director’s, Lead Software Architect’s, and our Web & Mobile Developers.

 

Firmware Engineering Interns can expect to do the following:

  • Partner with stakeholders to understand functional requirements of systems to accurately design and implement features.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to define and design proposed solutions that meet technical requirements and adhere to application design guidelines, strategies, and best practices
  • Develop unit test cases that accurately test interface functionality and responses to varied inputs both in and out of scope. These test cases will be created at all levels of the software stack
  • Work to analyze, debug, and resolve defects in applications as needed. Defects found should have new test cases created to capture the bug and verify it has been correctly fixed
  • Manage own work via Agile methodologies to deliver according to project schedules; be accountable for delivery
  • Determine methods for reporting metrics on TDD test coverage through the continuous integration server
  • Design, develop, and implement application level and firmware solutions that meet business needs

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or related field in a program of study at an accredited college or university
  • Must be able to work from our Oakbrook, IL office (15 miles west of Chicago) 3 days a week

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience using the C programming language and Visual Studio Code development environment
  • Familiarity with application development tools, processes, and technologies
  • Working knowledge of software development in at least one of the following: embedded C, object-oriented programming in C#, C++, Java, or .Net
  • Strong analytical abilities and effective communication skills

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous internship or co-op experience in firmware or software engineering
  • Experience in scripting languages such as Python or Bash
  • Experience with continuous integration platforms such as github actions
  • Proficient with MS Office tools
  • Adaptability to new business processes, technologies, and environments
  • Understanding of project management concepts
