Intern - Construction

An exciting opportunity is available to join Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. (GHA), an employee-owned, multi-faceted civil engineering consultant that has built a reputation for civil engineering with a personal approach. We are seeking a Construction Engineering Intern to join our growing Construction and Survey team in Vernon Hills, IL.

How you will make an impact:

The Construction Intern will report to the Construction & Survey Directors, Intern Coordinators, Project Managers, resident engineers and HR and will primarily work in the field and work periodically in the office. The Construction Intern will be involved in construction observation, field measurements, quantity calculations, and construction layout. Additionally, they will utilize various types of job-related equipment and measuring tools, perform related mathematical computations, and provide support to our professional construction engineering staff. This role is an non-exempt, hourly position.

Responsibilities:

  • Read, interpret, and comprehend engineering plans and contract specifications.
  • Perform engineering and related duties associated with the construction of various roadway and municipal infrastructure improvement projects, that includes construction observation, layout, inspection of material placement, measurement of quantities, and other tasks related to ensuring the construction work is completed in compliance with plans, specifications, and standards.
  • Accurately complete tasks assigned by Project Managers and construction engineers to meet project schedules and provide proactive reporting on task status.
  • Work under the supervision and mentoring of civil engineers and construction engineers.

What you will bring to Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc.:

Education:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field.

Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Self-starter with a strong attention to detail
  • Average knowledge of mathematics is important to certain functions of this job.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods, including inclement weather or extreme weather conditions.
  • Vision sufficient to see and read plan specifications, computer screens, printed documents, and to operate survey equipment.
  • Hearing sufficient to converse in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Detail-oriented individual who takes pride in producing high-quality individual work products.
  • Ability to focus to work independently with general supervision and collaboratively as part of a larger team to achieve project goals.
  • A solid work ethic with the desire to be curious to learn about firm business and the industry.
  • Must be able to take directions, collaborate with other team members, have good interpersonal and organizational skills, and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Utilize various engineering and word processing software including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Office suite.
